Hi there,

After installing the Linux base etc on my FreeBSD 5.2.1 machine
(p3 500mhz 256MB)
I got some problems running NS 2.01 server(same problem on plain halflife).

tryed: hlds_l_3110_full and hlds_l_3111e

the ping is going nuts when i connect to the server around 800-900 ping other players got the same ping for some reason.

anyone got a clue how to fix this?

thnx in advanced,
edg3

Need more info man. What have you tried? What does your CPU usage look like when full? empty? How much bandwidth do you have upsteam and down? Answering these basic questions will go a long in helping us help you diagnose the problem.

Sorry i got 10Mbit up and 10Mbit down.

    stat
    hostname: test
    version : 46/3.1.1.1 2615 insecure
    tcp/ip : 82.97.1.4:27015
    map : ns_eclipse at: 0 x, 0 y, 0 z
    players : 0 active (12 max)

    # name userid uniqueid frag time ping loss adr
    0 users

    stats
CPU In Out Uptime Users FPS Players
    0.00 0.00 0.00 9 3 49.31

as i noticed that the fps is switching betwean 49 and 100
As i am kinda new to bsd.. so dont have a clue to fix it...always had a win2000 server (wich run without problems).. i tryed reinstalling bsd... tryed reinstalling the linux_base-8...

    also mount_linprocfs linprocfs /compat/linux/proc

What about when there is people on it? Do a speed test at DSL reports and tell me what that says about your downsteam and upstream bandwidth. I don't think you have what you think you have bandwidth wise.

To be honest, I think you are kinda on the low side for cpu power, but it sounds really wierd that you have these problems with only one person on. FreeBSD isn't real Linux; I've heard some people who get it to work well but others can't. Since I don't know anything about running a FreeBSD system, I'm going to have to bow out of this conversation. Post answers to those questions above and maybe someone who has experience with FreeBSD can help.

What is your actual CPU usage, though? (In top or ps) The 'stats' method of finding CPU usage does not work.

Also, what is your FPS/CPU when people are actually in the server? (even just you)

I think it may be the CPU on this one...

I am a windows administrator of a isp and i droped my pc there. anyways its on 10Mbit (network card).. so speed shouldnt be a problem... when i let some of my friends join the server they got the same problem... as i am a real nub when it comes to freebsd. I dont know how to check the cpu..

But i find it weird that when i install windows 2000 on it that it hosts a 14peeps server with ease.. and i cant run it on freebsd?
as i suspect that unix was faster then windows right?

is it posible that a sub process is being the problem? or mayb a driver isue?! anyone ever got same problems before?

ps i think i saw someware that freebsd couldnt handle 2 network cards.. or somthing in that nature.. anyways i got one network card 3com 100Mbit on the lan and a realtec 10Mbit to the internet (both on diverent subnet masks and ip range and lan and internet are not on the same network).
    mayb that could be conflicting?

also noted that the server is directly connected to the internet with no firewall or nat.. straight on a internet router wich dont have an firewall.
    suggestions plz!

Normally linux is faster. But when it comes to HLDS & especially NS, windows is faster.

Hopefully joev will be able to get somewhere with rectifying that situation though. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Please do 'stats' and found out the FPS while there are people in game.

    Also,

I'm assuming you at least have SSH to the FreeBSD server. Type 'top' in the shell. It will show you your system statistics.

Do this while you're in-game (minimized, of course), and please paste it here, except only inlcude about the first 2 processes.

It should look something like this:

    last pid: 59455; load averages: 0.15, 0.11, 0.16 up 31+00:09:05 17:34:31
    48 processes: 1 running, 47 sleeping
