Can't Connect On First Try.

Like the title says, I cannot connect on my first try using anything! If I try to use multiplayer -> internet games -> join game my computer freezes with no error message. The only way I have countered this was by going into the console and typing "connect <address>". This is really annoying.
My specs:
400Mhz AMD
328mb RAM
Voodoo3 3000 16mb
HL running in 640x480 OpenGL mode w/Mini3Dfx drivers
P.S. I have also found at least two other bugs but those need pics and I can't convert my .bmp pics to .jpg yet.
