Why wont Steam detect my pre-existing installation of HL?

I just installed my GOTY edition of Half Life and Steam refuses to detect it and insists on downloading it from the net. Which frustrates me no end. How can I get steam to detect pre-existing retail installation of HL?

You don't. You don't even need your cd (just the cdkey). Just install steam, enter your key (go to Games->activate a product on Steam) and it will download and install half-life for you.

Are you sure that it wants to download it all again from the net.

If you're telling it to pluck an installation dated as the CD version, it will need to upgrade SO many files.
And anyway, if you know that it's updating, or downloading it from the web, then it must have picked up the installation anyway.

At one point it was possible to convert it to Steam, though I don't see the option for it any more.

Half-Life 1 is only 400MB anyway, so except if you are on dial-up it shouldn't be a huge hassle. (It would have to download the patched portions anyway, possibly why you can't copy it over any more)
