I Don't Want To Hear Myself

NS has just inspired me to finally shell out for a microphone. Maybe all you seasoned voice gamers can help me. It works, and records, but I can hear myself in the headphones. This drives me nuts.

I can only hear myself occurs when sound input is actually active - eg when the record button has been pressed in Sound Recorder, or all the time I'm playing NS . All the usual suspects on the control panels are off - the microphone is muted and turned all the way down in the output mixer; that control appears to only affect what I hear from the microphone when not recording.

I'm using a Gateway PC with onboard Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64D.

Any advice would be appreciated. Is this just an unavoidable feature of the sound card?

Thanks, but that's not it. What I'm hearing is immediate feedback, implying some sort of mixer feature, rather than the delayed feedback you get from that software option. If I turn that option on, I hear myself twice.

Go to control panel, then sounds and multimedia (might be named differently depending on what OS you're using), then in the panel that pops up put a check in "Show volume control on taskbar" and hit ok.

There should now be a little speaker icon in your system tray. Double click it and in the the mixer put a check in the mute box under "microphone". If the microphone entry isn't there go to options - properties and see if microphone is checked under "show the following volume controls".

Now, this might not be exactly the same on your system since some things vary a bit between different OS' and sound cards, but at the very least it'll hopefully point you in the right direction.
