The Skillz In Baseball & Cricket

which is it?
I don't play both these sports myself on a regular basis but I do see them being played (although I can;t be bothered with cricket)

Anyways, cricket skills seems more complex compared to baseball because both the batter and pitcher are doing it in an odd manner. Like the pitcher throws it from top to bottom. And the batter hits the ball from bottom to top. Now that takes real skills I find to be able to do that and still be able to like hit high.

Baseball on the other hand is pure brute strength. You can throw the ball anyway you want and you can hit with your bat in any fashion you like. Mind you though the bats are circular so its harder to hit a ball dead on (well I find it hard) while cricket bats are flat and easy.

To be honest, cricket players need to have more skills if they want to play a game and remian intact. Only the other month did I see a batter get both his hands broken by an aggressive and purposeful bowler ("NowThatsJustNotCricket). That padding they wear isn't for show.

Cricket players are taught their skills by pain. Cricket balls HURT

Maybe it's not the case at a professional level, but games of cricket I played were reeeeeaaaally boring. Ninety-five percent of the time, you're just standing in a field, with the danger of someone hitting a ball at you.

Baseball bores me to tears watching it, and cricket seems more action packed. I watched it when I was in Barbados.

I used to love playing Quick Cricket.

I know nothing about baseball, but I should think cricketeers need more stamina, matches go on for so damn long and the batters often stay in play for god knows how many runs each. Not a fan of watching cricket due to this...its long and boring

Baseball looks more fast paced, looks more interesting from an entertainment perspective, but I've never really watched a match due to them usually being shown on C5 at about 3 in the morning. Usually before the NASCAR highlights

EDIT: Depot is the ol' memory going already? I think you already said that...

    Baseball is not fast paced.

Niether is Cricket for that matter, however, it is impressive when you see some fielder hit the wickets side on from over 50 metres away.

Wicket stumps are 1 inch in width and 32 inches high.

I can't stand to watch cricket but I can appreciate the skill involved in it with all the various types of shot, plus it's alot harder to hit a ball that's bouncing (Not to mention the spin) up at you then a relatively easier straight flight ball.

Also you get penalised in Baseball for hitting the batter, as far as I'm aware there is no penalty in cricket for "Body Bowling".

personally i dont see how baseball takes skill to play, BUT as ive never really watched it im probly wrong.

are there different ways of pitching the ball or is it just, pick a place, throw?

baseball certainly is slower pace, but i don't think it takes less skill to play. hitting a 90mph fastball isn't easy, and neither is throwing it.

i've played cricket before, and the score can be outrageous if one team outskills the other. they can literally be a score difference of hundreds...

you're right in that the flat bat or paddle that they use is a real turn-off for me, especially with the way you're supposed to hold it feels awkward, while holding a baseball bat is very intuitive. i think i'd like cricket much better if they used a cylindrical bat like baseball.

    Heh.

I played the local fun league baseball for quite a few years and I must say I quite enjoy it.

I would say hand-eye and quickness is more important then strength for baseball. Your trying to hit this ball coming at you at 50-60 mph, and the pitcher can put spin on it so it doesn't fly straight. The slider is really nasty, starts out coming towards you, then curves back over the plate.

You ever watch a game on TV, those pitches are usually in the 90-100 mph range, so they are even more fun to hit.

Mind you, I find watching baseball extreamly boring. I have lots of fun if I'm playing, but sitting and watching is just meh.

I've only seen cricket once, it seemed rather similar, just that cricket takes longer to play because it doesn't have the 3 outs and switch sides that baseball does.

Cricket is great fun to play, not so much to watch though. On the other hand, I've never played baseball or watched it for that matter, of course I know about it, but its never really taken off anywhere near my location.

Cricket and baseball are (to me) equally boring to watch. Some guy throws a ball, another guy hits a ball, it goes somewhere, someone throws it someplace else, the end. Then again I've never been a fan of watching sports like that (football (both kinds) rugby, cricket, basketball, baseball etc... never been a fan of watching them).

Cricket was never fun to play at school because of the way you have to hit the ball. With baseball it's like *CRACK*, manly, powerful, beating the **** out of the ball with a wooden stick kind of thing. But in cricket because of how the ball comes to you (and you can't swing back really because of the wickets) you have to do some nancy little tap and leg it to the other wicket to get a point. I did have fun bowling in cricket though. Trying to put a spin on the ball (and then having it WORK!) was really fun (hey it was school, we were hardly pro).

Baseball is %90 mental and only %10 physical tbh.

    The count is 3-2.

Is he going to throw a slider away?

    Fastball up?

    Breaking ball in?

While over in the managers head, you have this going on...

Should i pinch hit for him, or should i leave him in and let him pitch some more? Hes pitching a good game...

    Infield in or away?

Who should i use for the next inning? X person is good against leftys, but Y person is better at strikeouts...

Your brain can explode trying to think about what to do next when your at the plate or a manager.

I played baseball for several years, and I think it's really challenging. I've also watched the Indian kids at school play cricket, and though I can't really make sense of it, I appreciate the work that goes into it.
I think it's amazing how a baseball pitcher can throw so many different ways, making the ball do all sorts of crazy things (knuckle ball, anyone?). I'm more impressed by how batters learn to see where the ball will go just by watching the spin as it approaches them at 110kph.
