<div class="IPBDescription">I summon your help!</div> Alright, I'm moving into what is, in effect, a Christian frat house in the next month or so. Said frat house has had some issues in the past with online materials that, shall we say, are not very Christian-like.

Now, they've been using Cyber-sitter, but that's a real pain, since it blocks things that don't need to be blocked at all. We'd really like to not have any sort of filter on there, but only a logging bit set up so that we can get a log of what was accessed when and by what logon.

My plan was to set up my computer as a gateway, and then get some sort of program to log all the net traffic, then run something else to scan it for keywords and the like.

I have a few questions:
1) Is this possible?
2) Is this the most efficient method for this sort of thing?
3) Are there any existing programs that would help me do this sort of thing without having to code it myself or draft one of you into coding it for me?

If this kind of thing were easyer on looon-eeex, I could set up a crappy box to do that with no problems, but would need a detailed tutorial on the procedure to get that running.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah having my own opinion that dosen't follow the norm there is such a great reason to be banned from it, grow up, and dont dare accuse me of trolling when you couldn't help but dip into that same realm.

Anyway on topic, I don't understand why you'd want to filter your own traffic, as I was saying, free will works wonders...

So guys, how about that topic, eh?

Legionnaired; putting your computer as a residential gateway should work fine, I've seen it done before. I don't know what the usual setup is, but one question: how many computers do you expect to connect to yours? You don't want to create some sort of choke point. Though I don't think you'll have that problem.

The company i work for has a Microsoft ISA server with caching and logging enabled. This moniters what goes through. You can go further though by adding keywords into the ISA server and any website URL containing the words are blocked.

Hmm, even though I'm a good little christian, I don't remember any jazz in mr. doctorine saying thou shalt not look at chicks getting naked for money... unless that goes confilcts with obeying parents, who, mine anyway, wouldn't ever bring up that subject. Maybe I slept through that sermon.

Roberto, unless the un-christian bits involved barnyard animals or (in the case of Southern Baptists) guys getting naked for money.

Yes, it's easy to do this with Linux. It's also easy to avoid, if people behind the gateway understand a little thing called 'proxies', and you aren't REGEX matching the text on each page. Which is worthless, as it'll provide false hits, and do jack squat for images. Oh, and can be negated with a secure stream proxy. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Best solution is to be mature adults, and realize that everyone looks at porn. ESPECIALLY those who are vocally against it.

Just remove the doors from rooms with computers.

I'm kind of siding with CWAG here though, surely the point is to fight temptation, not ignore it.

Besides which, a little bit of self love a) keeps you happier and healther and b) is hardly dependant on the internet. Anyone who's feeling horny will... er get it out of their system whether they have eye candy or not.

    Where theres a will there's a whack.

Just avoid the stuff with nuns

Blocking sites isn't necessary, as the threat of logging should discourage them. I would suggest posting large posters in each room spelling this out. An image of Uncle Sam pointing at them with the text "We're watching you" comes to mind.

Someone would have to manually analyze the log to find violators, though a text search would significantly reduce the work involved. They would also have to verify and compile the list of violations for the next prayer circle, so that these people are given an opportunity to repent for their sins. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

How about the you replace the picture of uncle sam with a pic of uncle jesus.

Or, even better, post the classic "every time you masterbate, god kills a kitten"

Guys, Legionnarred has good reason to filter their sites. He only said it was non-christian, he never said it was porn.

I mean, what would happen should one of the flock stumble onto <a href='http://www.venganza.org/' target='_blank'>Flying Spaghetti Monsterism</a>.

    The repercussions could be devastating.

Thanks for that T H E M. Now I finally know where I came from and can die happy. I will go out and spread the word.

i'm afraid i too will have to support my fellow restricted member cwag on this. forciablly keeping your frat mates ignorant of the tempations out there is the wrong way to go. The key to strength is to know what's out there, and have the will power to resist. as mentioned before, a simple log on sites visited should do the trick. and if any of your flock strays, you can beat them with your big sheppard's cane
