i just use my desk with a little rug type thing on it. works fine for me but i do need to get a mouse pad.

My A4 intuos 3 drawing Tablet comes with a wireless mouse so I use it as a mouse pad too. Its so amazingly smooth and the mouse never needs recharging or batteries.
