Remember the fuss that kicked up over the Manhunt murder? The press blamed the violent, graphic, snuff-like game for driving a "poor teenager" to kill his best friend.
What they didn't print was the motive was actually robbery, as the killer didn't have a copy of the game, and his mother had told him to buy it himself, as she wouldn't buy it for him. The teenager, unable to save the £35 for the game, decided to steal it from his best friend, who caught him in the act of stealing. Killer reacts very badly, and stabs his friend, and runs off.
Press, naturally blamed the game, but were forced to actually print an apology to the developers, when they were informed by the police of the actual motive.
You know what I'd love? If all the video game developers would collaborate to make an extremely ultra-violent video game, hardcore sexual content up the wazoo (perhaps literally?) etc. etc. etc. Make it about assaulting kindergartens with chainsaws or something, with gratuitous necrophiliac rape scenes liberally sprinkled about the game. Basically all "the media's" wet dreams rolled into one. Then name it "Scapegoat."
Edit: That being said, this article is actually surprisingly good. If there is any veiled condemnation, I find none. It's simple and factual. Thumbs up.

Authorities said the man and two others were playing characters who might be murdered depending on the outcome of the game. After Shaquille O'Neal lost, he allegedly allowed the other men to carry out the ritualistic sacrifices dedicated to Satan, just as happened in the popular online multiplayer game.
O'Neal and his parents were killed on April 26 after being drugged and tied to a bed with their own intestines, police said. Their bodies were found nine days later at the home in the town of Guarapari, 440 miles northeast of Sao Paulo.
After a brief shootout with police the killers escaped on their get-away Chupacabra and are still at large.
