They've actually been in competition, and it was very much resembling the old VHS/Betamax war. It's official now, Sony and the HD-DVD backers (Toshiba and a few other big-name companies) have joined forces and are working on combining the two.
Also, it's going to take at least that long if not more, by my estimates. They have to waste time negociating, deciding what's best, coming out with official specifications and standards, manufacture prototype drives, put them through a test run with experimental discs, refine it, rinse and repeat for however long is necessary until it's a stable, inexpensive platform. Then they have to enable manufacturers to mass-produce these things, enable them to manufacture drives and actually get them out the door.

One more thing that might prove that this is NOT an official concept: Sony would be really bloody stupid to "feature" the UMD drive when it's not even needed. In fact, if it even supports UMDs, it seems more likely that they'll be making it an add-on or a tiny little slot hidden in the corner of the machine.
I don't know how UMD's compare to DVD's, but aren't they basically just like tiny DVD's in a minidisc-like casing? Or are they totally different in the way they're written/read? There would probably be either an external adaptor for the UMD (supposing the PS3 will have USB or FW) or they'll force you to get a PSP for connectivity.
My personal favourite, honestly what is the obsession these fake concept artists have with making thing look like a vision of the future from 1974, curves and chrome effect are not your friend especially when you have to stack a DVD player a Sky box and dozens of DVD cases under the same TV as you're highly polished gaming box.
^^Same here, I propably wont buy a single one. Doubtless all my friends will have one of each, allowing me to play multiplayer whenever I want. And as we all know, split-screen multiplayer frag fests is the main purpose of consoles anyway.
