why?
why does anyone use aim?

its such a terrible program. why not use msn? or even yahoo, which is also pretty bad. but aim? i really don't see why anyone ever would want to use it.

people started using it because there friends had AOL and it came built in with it and when they upgraded to cable or whatnot some of their friends still had AOL so they stuck with it to talk with them

Because everyone else I know does.

It'd be pretty darn stupid to use another messenger program that my other friends don't use, and I'm too lazy to convince anyone to switch.

Besides, how do you define "better" ? I send a message, they recieve message. They send message, I recieve message. AIM fills that job fairly well. I don't do anything beyond that, and AIM supports more than that.

Mmm... It's like the whole Cake > Pie or Pie > Cake argument. Some people like a ton of icing, others like warm apple cinnamon tidbits.

so people use aim just because other people use aim? why dont we start a mass changeover to msn or something. just tell everyone on aim to switch to msn, and tell them to tell their friends to switch to msn.

edit: and aim has no icing or apple tidbits. its like dry crust.

    Edit: And I hate msn.

Edit#2: And some people like eating dry crust.

    Edit#3: And I don't like trillian.

I don't care what you use, but if Trillian covers it hell, knock yourself out. I hardly have anyone using MSN on my Trillian.

i didnt really like trillian that much. it was buggy, and the new msn 7 was much nicer in my opinion.

Comparing IRC to an Instant Messenger is like comparing a console to a PC.

    It just doesn't work.

I don't like MSN because it's not what everyone else uses. It's truly a pain to have some people using one IM Program and some people use another, and then refuse to use what the majority likes because you find it's not as good.

Besides, I know AIM pretty well now, and I don't like MSN's interface at all.

AIM is a trashy little program by AOL, whom I don't trust at all. Trillian, while not the greatest program, takes care of everything.

By the way, "cool" and "trendy" are for people who need crutches for their social lives.

i prefer trillian much more than aim. its a genious little thing. if they could just utilize more options in all it supports and make it stable it would be perfect.

People use AIM because it doesn't matter whether you use AIM, MSN, ICQ, or anything else when there are so many differnt programs that can do more than one of them at the same time.

Trillian doesn't support most of any additional features for any messenger program (such as Yahoo!'s avatars, which still don't work on my computer), so they're pretty much all the same for me. I do notice that Yahoo! Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger both use HTTP requests to log in to the server, meaning they have a greater chance of having problems with DNS server downtime (it's happened to me).

I prefer AOL Instant Messenger because it seems to have the most uptime, and as it was said before, more people use it. ICQ used to be the choice of gamers, but its ad-laden layout after the AOL buyout seemed to tarnish its image. AOL IM has stuck around because of the proprietary nature for AOL users, most of which can't play games on the connection speed they get on the AOL gateway. ICQ users, however, were less likely to use AOL for their ISP, meaning they were less willing to accept the advertisements. Yahoo! and MSN seem to be pretty much on the same level of popularity, that being not all that great, but at least better than ICQ is now. They both seem to have the same set of features, but I think Yahoo! has a better chance of being accepted by geeks than Microsoft, because of the stigma associated with the latter company. I haven't used MSN Messenger's actual program in quite some time now: I didn't like how intertwined it was with my operating system.

However, I don't really like using instant messengers at all. I much prefer email, because it gives me time to think out responses. Instant messaging is too intrusive.

msn has come a long way from what it used to be. now it has a real nice display picture system, you can draw in the text box with your mouse, it can show the music you are listening to in your wmp, do mic and webcam stuff, and i rarely have downtime with it. every once in a while there might be a maintenance time or something, but thats usually at around 5am. and windows messenger might be what you are thinking of that was really intertwined with your computer. it comes with xp and is associated with IE and a bunch of stuff. its kinda like a crappier version of msn, since they dont update windows messenger. i dont even think windows messenger is supported anymore.

yea thats one of the reasons i switched back to msn. the new msn 7 has lots of neat new things like that. you have to have an updated journal viewer thing. if you have a fully updated windows then it will work fine.

Trillian doesn't do a lot of the extra features provided by the original programs. I'm not entirely certain if a mouse-to-pen feature really warrants the multiple programs and extra memory footprint.

yea but i was tired of trillians look and feel. it lacked a lot of features that i really enjoy about msn.
  • MedHeadMedHead Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11115Members, Constellation
That's where we're different, 6john. I like Trillian's new look (oh so much better than version 2); I think the simplicity looks good. However, I really dislike the "XP" look of MSN Messenger. Actually, the feeling of distaste about the "XP" look pretty much extends to anything made by Microsoft to mesh with the latest operating system: I really despise the glossiness. Strangely enough, I do like most of the Macintosh operating system's glossiness: there's something different between the two glossy styles, and I think it's the cartooniness of XP that does it for me.

As for the features, since I dislike talking on the messenger programs as it is, I really don't want to have all the extra things to bug me. No, I'm not a total curmudgeon.
