Have You Tried Competitive Ns Lately?

This is for those that are not in a clan
For those that don't know, competitive NS is very different than normal pub NS. Roles are more defined, people work together and of course the skill level is much higher. Even if your current skill level isn't very high I guarantee after a couple of weeks playing competitively your skill will double. Even more if you join the right clan. I am sure others can say a lot more about how great competitive play is.
Have you tried competitive NS lately?
If yes
What did you like or dislike about it?
Would you want to join a clan and play in a league like CAL?
If no
Would you consider trying it? I would like to encourage everyone to think about it.
If you answer yes to any of these following question you give it a try.
Are you bored with the current play style of NS and want a change?
Can't get enough of NS?
Want to improve your skill?
Want to test your skill against the best?
Want to see how NS is played with real teamwork?
Like planning strats, and organize play?
There are currently a lot of good teams out there looking for players of all skill levels. A lot of them are looking for comms. There are even a few CAL Omega teams that have potential of winning it all. They just need a few more players. If you would like more information on competitive play visit the competitive section on the NS forums. If you would like more information about joining a competitive team there are many places you can look.

4. #findnsclan on IRC (I think this is still up)
Other good places to find more info:
1. #nspickup (Play competitive style games without joining a clan.)

I can only speak for myself, but even though I have played fairly regularly since NS 1.0, I am so bad at the game that I create a black hole on the server, sucking in all skill and causing players to run into walls and fire at doors. Seriously, I don't try to get into competitive NS for the health and safety of other people.
Im just afraid of not doing well, and getting replaced early on.
If some 'natural' comes along and does better than me, I most likely will be replaced.
Secong, even though it's still "competitive" you shouldn't strive to be number one from the start. That's impossible. In my opinion, the best way to start is get a feel for the way the game is played and expose yourself to the community. Even if your clan ultimatly fails and disbands, you've put yourself out there, and people know you now. You're effectivly in the scene.
Things may be differnt in the world of "OMG CAL IS GOD". But here in Australia, competitive ns is fairly forgiving.
yes i like to join CAL however its too far away from me =|. i cannot stand the 2XX ping. i myself have tried 2 times in a competitive play helping the other team since they dun have enough people suddenly. and yes i do like competitive play.
btw, i agree to Charisma sayings =)
When we finally found a PCW, the other team was just to good.
The PCWs often ended with the other team spawncamping us to death.
I see my self as quite a good NS player, but some of my friends haven't played NS for such a long time so it can be hard to play competitive.
I see nothing bad in playing in a clan with friends to get better, but finding other low skill clans is the biggest problem for us.
We are planning on starting up the clan again, but where should we search for PCWs?
IRC is the only place I know of.

Good commanders are kind of scarce in competitive play, so teams won't just kick out their commander.
I think it's by now known that I really have no qualms with competitive NS, but that argument is kinda weakened by all the junkies who use it in favor of their passtime of choice
1. The constant whining and bching from other players about other players
2. The incessant use of leet speak and other moronic taunts
3. IRC and I have a shared "I hate you" relationship and therefore will never cooperate
4. I have no interest in digging through my config for the magic combination of settings for the uberprimocombo of death.
5. Morons who would rather blame each other rather than strategically determine what went wrong
6. any other generalized nastiness associated with competitive play
I have better things to do than ignore this crud just to be involved in competitive play. Find me a clan that solves these issues and I'll consider it.
Drama and idiocy.
I've had NS since the Hallowe'en release, and being playing clan games since about 2.00 I think.
But the EU clan scene is dying horribly right now. There's about 5 active clans(!).
Cookies to people who start some new ones up!

as opposed to just idiocy!
If you're about playing ns, you can stay out of the forum/irc garbage scene, and not really be bothered by all the asshats.

Yes, because I'm sure somebody out there was born with a 15-20 inch mousepad, mouse accel off in XP and a constant 100ish FPS as well as a few thousand hours of training and experience.
Wait, except not. Theres no naturals - it goes so far that even slightly handicapped people can probably do well in competitive NS (albeit mp_bs 1 euroleagues might require 3rd party macroing software for the truely physically handicapped). Sure its just a game - but if you expect to do well at something by simply hoping you're a natural or not, then you're pretty silly.
Practice, dedication and endlessy re-analyzing yourself. Thats all that will make you better. Ask any highlevel player - they've all easily got around 2k hours of NS under their belt at some time or another, even the largely inactive ones/hasbeens.

IRC is typically the easiest way to find a match...
If on gamesurge, #findnsscrim or #findnsscrim (this second one recently got a bot that lets you borrow a server if you don't have your own)
If on quakenet #ns.search is pretty much the only place to look.. (#gamingorb.ns also has a server-borrowing bot I think)
However, this problem will hopefully be solved in the coming month with the release of a new project I've been working on for some time... keep watching the front page for news soon
You guys take it waaaay too seriously. Maybe it's a flaw in my personality but I can't sit down and play to be #1 in my every muscle and fiber.

Most clans have you tryout before joining. Depending on your skill they may have you play a couple of scrims with them. For my clan the past of people that tried we knew right away they were not at our level. That doesn't mean they couldn't make it on another team. We try not to recruit someone just to fill the roster. We would want people that can make a difference on the team.
What I would do is after the tryout ask them how you compare to the rest of the team. If they say you are below them but but are good enough to join there clan the odds are if you don't improve you may find yourself on the sidelines alot.
--------------------------------------
I am finding it rare for someone to be with the same clan for a long time. At least in Omega division. Clans come and go and so do the players. Some get better and move on to other divisions. Its best to form a clan with friends but alot of times some of the players want to get more competitive and they want to play more scrims while other cannot so it tears the clan apart. Personally I have more fun playing with a good clan that wins than just playing for fun. So I joined a clan that had good potential too do that. They are not all my firends but we are getting along and building friendships as we go. Sometimes it works out other times it does not.
-------------------------------------
The reason its hard to find scrims with clans that are "low in skill" is because any clan that scrims alot is going to get better. The clans that scrim alot are the good ones, Those that don't are the bad one. (meaning less skilled)
Its important to remember that every clan is different. Try a few and see which one you like the best.
Playing in a clan is very hard work but it is worth it if you want to get the full feel for the game.
#findscrimns is the other channel napi was talking about( on gamesurge.net) We currently have 6 scrim servers up, 4 of which are east ( for you euros). This channel is going to be used for more then scrims/matches although that will be the main reason, but if any of you have any questions about anything to do with competitive just pm me `GoD and I will be sure to help you out. I am hoping to eventually get 3-4 people to help me with helping others (kind of like guides) but for right now it is just me. These servers can also be used for clans to practice not just scrim, they can book the server and if needed pm me or another op and I will set them up with sv_cheats to run around the map and find seige spots/strats to use. The servers can also be used for private or group help from me.
I actually surprised that it never occured to me before. Given that I worked at a gaming center for nearly 2 years, and that NS was kind of a hobby (until I started converting people to it, from CS), I honestly never thought to myself "Hold on, I should give the NS clan scene a check".
I suppose it might be a good thing, if a clan is looking for a grenadier/base builder, they are my 2 main skills, nade spamming, and keeping the camp fire going whilst the lads are out getting something to cook on it...
Only consideration that I have is that I can't do it for probably 2 weeks, as then I will be getting DSL!!! (f***ing BT!)
But when I get my lovely 2Mb/s connection, I will be hitting the NS scene, and PlanetSide, so hard, that their sequels will be born bruised...

Like saltz said, there are no naturals. specialy when it comes to Comming. granted will learn a little more quickly, but thats usualy because theya re making more of an effort to learn than the next.
Like said before, you analyze it all. And also watch demos of the pros out there to get ideas as the type of stratagies.
Hmm, maybe I might give the competitive scene a miss then, if I have to reskill myself...
I've been playing since around 1.04, and started playing in clans just before 2.0 i believe. I quit about a year afterwards due to the fact that i gained a life outside my computer.
Its fun to a degree, but some people take the game waay to seroiusly. Its fun to test your skills against the best, but the best have little patience to teach noobs.

Yup, I have to agree. This is a game, I can't take it seriously at ALL. The best games are the ones where people relocate to like, a vent or something, to see how long they can hold out. Or Marines that make a human ladder to get on top of something just for the fun of it.
I've played in quite a few "serious" NS matches, and people just dont know how to have fun. Theres nothing wrong with losing, its just as fun as winning sometimes.
My 2 cents.
And I can't scrim on mondays and thursdays.

erm...who said you have to take it seriously?
just play the game. only difference is that matches will be schedualed and you have a team to practice with.

for all those that say your skill is crap, play with the best and (eventually) play like the best.

obs and wnf had a scrim on ns_seige007... That was a barrel of laughs, Specialy when the onos got welded to death by multiple heavies.
although obs has superior strats on ns_seige007 far more than any clan out thier. It is my firm belief that they are the Queens of that map. and one day, I hope my clan may beable to get that spot on day, with enough scrimming and practicing on that particular map.
But serisouly now, some clans screw around alot more than other clans. but all the clans have onthing in commen, That absolute love of the game, and having good games. Most of the higher upclans do push themselves alot and a Must Win additude. If you dont enjoy that additude then join a more lax clan. If your a person who wants to improve youself some, Or want to see the beuity of NS at its absolute best, then join a clan and check it out for a session or two.
