    To get technical, I don't think it's a compressor but merely a file "lumper".

    Tar is usually combined with GZip to get a good little compressed file.

    tar is just a format that lummps a bunch of files together into one file without compression. It was opriginally designed for use in archieving on tape drives (hence the name "Tape ARchive". It isn't used very often anymore except when combined with compression, typically GZip or BZip, and even then only on certain UNIX-like systems.

    And as everbody knows, 7Zip > BZip > GZip.

    It's like FTP, only it's secure, and doesn't break through NAT. Unless you're copying from one remote host to another remote host (you're on PC A, and want B to copy to C) it's pretty much universally better.

    That's...the only situation where I've ever used scp. But I generally only use the *nix machines through remote terminals

    in my experience SCP is quite a bit slower than FTP though...

    For public sites (anonymous FTP), FTP should still be used, cause who cares if it is encrypted, but for non-public things, yeah SCP should really be used...
