Steam Earns A Point

in my books.
Steam did something yesterday that I did not know it capable of. I was joining a server for a quick game of TFC (Taking its sweet time downloading the security module, me being 56k and all), and music starts playing. I was confused for a bit, wondering why my comp felt the need to play some jazz, when I realized that I left a JJ Johnson CD in the drive.

I didn't know it did that, and I thought that I might share it with you undoubtedly more-informed-than-I people.

Hmm, I didn't know it did that either. Although, I'm on cable and security modules take only a few seconds to download, so yea

It took me like 5 games of NS to discover this. And what was really annoying was that it only played the first track. I hate that song now...

Anything in the CD drive played back in the WON days. And yes, it was only the first track, too.

It's marvelous... I get some Mozarts Clarinet Concerto each time I connect... beautiful!

Reminds me of the time I was playing AOE with my HL CD inside the tray, and it started playing HL1 music.

I remember thinking... "Valve, this music sucks." Only to realize it was my own CD in the drive...

Actualy its a value set when creating the map so you can change the track.

I believe that maps are able to specify a CD track to play on the map start. <s>This is how Quake had its music, as each level had its own track on the CD.</s> Whee I am the master of inappropiate surplus information.

Personally I think a point should be given to Steam for downloading Half-life's music cues so you don't need the CD in to hear them : )

You have always been able to play and control cds through the console, too.

'cd play #' - Plays the specified track
'cd loop #' - Loops it
    'cd stop' -

I really enjoy this feature, though it's old. Hearing 'The Grudge' while you connect really adds to the experience.

Hmm, I bet. With lines like "Saturn ascends" starting with the sound of some service lift as the console loads up, which descends you into to a sublime 8 minute long morphing landscape of music that builds to a crescendo of adrenaline inducing rhythm with Maynard belting "Let go" like a mantra. I can see how that would compliment your game

Weird. I've heard this several times, either the Half-Life music or music I've never even HEARD before.

    pretty neato,

I just changed all the ns default music tracks to some freaky or kick **** tracks from my extensive collection.

Works nice in terms of game ambience.

This dates back to Quake. Though it's generally the second track, not the first - the first would be considered data on the game CD, so it starts at 2.

I used to play Quake online with Siamese Dream in most of the time, and occasionally (in a weird mish-mash of genres) Warcraft II or the Warcraft II expansion CD in the drive... very rarely used the actual quake CD.

I have try that sometime, just hearing that would really put me in the mood for some NS, but that might just be because Tool rock.

Scared the bejesus out of me the first time. My bro had left a Fat Boy Slim CD in the drive, think it started playing that "Right Here Right Now" song. I was wondering what the hell was going on.
