Man this topic is old. I read the first post, and I'm like, "Yeah, those are good books. I'm surprised someone else had heard of them." And then I saw it was me.

Given all the other titles in here, this'll probably get me boo'd and hissed at, but here we go....
My Tank Is Fight! is a surprisingly good read. I was expecting usual somethingawful.com rubbish, but the book is actually well researched and very well written. There's a section for each invention called "What fight have been", which is a short story written from the perspective of someone in the battlefield encountering / using one of the inventions. They're very well written too, and even actually moving in some parts.
Zack Parsons is the author, and he's surprised me. He was always my favourite sa.com front page writer, but this book far surpasses those. I'd honestly recommend this book to anyone with any kind of passing interest to WW2, whether you hate sa.com or not.

Not at the book. At you and your sense of humor.
On-topic, I read The Hot Zone recently. If you're not into biology or science in general, you might not enjoy, but I thought it was cool.

Iain M. Banks' The Algebraist
Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy
anything by Robert Ludlum
