    Word of warning: WMV sucks and anyone who converts to it from a perfectly good AVI which could use XViD deserves to be stabbed.

    QFT, unless you are streaming it, in which case you should be using Quicktime.

    QuickTime = t3h *** IMHO.

    I've heard that MKV is good for video compression, and in some cases, is better than XviD (although XviD is the premiere choice for compression right now).

    If you're a real man, you'd do OGM.

    I use River Past Video Cleaner. Pretty straight forward, useful for converting wmvs into something PSPVideo9 can convert for my PSP to use.

    But doesn't ogm just use avi video codecs but ogg audio streams?

    I'd suggest sticking to either avi's or mov's rather than getting into wmv due to licensing issues with the wmv codec, manipulating post-compression isn't all that possible, and generally, you can achieve the same filesize and quality with a different codec. It's really not worth going out of your way for.

    And for tools, codecs and guides when it comes to video compression, <a href='http://www.doom9.org/' target='_blank'>doom9.org</a> is a pretty decent place to look. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    As does .mkv (Matroska format).

    They are container formats. Either one can be encoded with DivX or Xvid or some other codec.

    Come to think of it though, i do remember hearing of an ogg vorbis video codec at some point, doubt it's actually been released, but it may be in the works.

    Yeah, ogg ds. It's been released. It's required for playback, so you have an ogg splitter/muxer. Well, last time I checked it could be used as both.

    Unless you're talking about that thing they're working on now. I forget the name. I don't really visit the Xiph Foundation's website anymore.
