Ascii Art

<div class="IPBDescription">how is it done?</div> How exactly is this type of art done? is it like made by some weird program or is it like 30 year old men sitting in their mothers basements typing little symbols all day long to make really cool pictures.

Ones that advanced are computer generated. Some ASCII art is hand done, but it's a fair bet that if it uses more than two tones of shading it's computer generated.

It used to be hand done. Back in the days of yore.

    Now it's all automagical.

If I was a 30 year old man locked in my mother's basement with my hands tied to a keyboard, I too might go insane and begin to create art out of ascii symbols.

So go easy on them old fellas ok?

not all ASCII art is done in ASCII (go figure)
ANSI (common in .nfo art today) and Shift_JIS (aka SJis or S_Jis) are probably rhe two most common under ASCII

    two main types of text-art:
    line art:
almost always hand drawn, uses lines to form borders of shapes
    shaded art:
almost always computer generated (unless it's ANSI art, which is almost always done by hand) uses different charachters as "pixels" on a canvas. uses few (if any) colors.

a few of my favorite sites
    <a href='http://www.acid.org/' target='_blank'>ACiD</a>
    <a href='http://www.fairlight.org/' target='_blank'>fairlight (site has been dead for a while)</a>
<a href='http://www.textfiles.com/piracy/FAIRLIGHT/' target='_blank'>a bunch of NFOs from the old scene</a> (no links, nothing illegal. just some nfos)

    nfo viewers:
    <a href='http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Text-editors/DAMN-NFO-Viewer.shtml' target='_blank'>DAMN NFO viewer</a>
    <a href='http://www.portablefreeware.com/?c=1' target='_blank'>acidview (scroll down)</a> <-- bm likes this one

The more recent ATi cards have a function which lets you play any OpenGL game in ASCII, in white and green flavours. Pretty cool really

It's impossible to play like that, because the letters are so big. If they used a smaller font, then you may actually be able to do something.

    ASCII art, <a href='http://www.paulsmithfoundation.org/index.html' target='_blank'><i>oldskool</i></a>.

The guy uses a typewriter to draw pictures. Now THAT is ASCII art!
