<div class="IPBDescription">I need some recommendations</div> I've decided that I'd like to play Natural-Selection again. I had stopped playing after my old clan/community (Online Evolution) had broken up. I had also become bored of all of the combat games being played, and have since moved on.

I want to get back into the game now. Can anyone recommend me some pub servers to play on? I'd like to do pug, but IRC is blocked for me at my college. (JMU) Here's a list of what I'm looking for in a server:

-Experienced players
-Friendly players
-Loads of teamwork
-Mostly NS maps in rotation

Can anyoe here give me some recommendations? Thanks!

    UK server, YO-Clan (Classic)
Great community, theres almost always some yo-guys on there, full of teamwork usually and its classic maps only.

    But if you ain't in the UK/Europe I can't help <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Lunixmonster almost never runs CO(69.93.5.186:27015)
Theres also FR31NS, but that runs CO when theres a low player count)(64.37.227.122:27015)

Plays Co with low player counter (5 or less), other than that plays NS. Best pub I have played. This server has more teamwork than I have seen in any other pub. Also no game effecting plug-ins for NS maps. You can spawncamp. They wont ban for skill.

If you want teamwork and experienced players... why not join a clan? You get higher teamwork and experience generally in a clan vs a pub...

AIM or some other instant messenger could work too, but IRC is to prefer.

Can't you connect to gamesurge via their java-client found on their site?

Thank you very much for the info! I should have included that I'm located in North America, east coast. Sinkler nailed it on the clan thing; I can't get on IRC and that's usually very important, unless something like teamspeak was used in its place. I can't connect with to the applets either for the same reason; it's still blocked.

I'll definitely add all of the mentioned servers to my favorites list, thank you very much. I actually remember playing on lunixmoster along time ago as it was one of the first ones on steam. Tactical gamer sounds great; I forgot to mention that I do like CO maps when there are less than 6 people as the games have a tendency to be extremely one-sided otherwise, so that plugin/setting's perfect. (PS: I like ff=on too, which TG and FR3 have <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

Lunixmonster's good, (lunixmonster.org:27015), I'm on the east coast, and ping 40-60. (server's somewhere in texas)

From your descriptions you are looking for these two server. They both describe perfectly your desires and will ping well from anywhere on the easy coast USA.

Nice, I'm trying them all now! I'm trying to connect to TG, but it says that I don't have C-D. I just downloaded 4.29.0 from united admins and it's running now, but I'm still being kicked. Odd.

    james madison, eh?
ventrilo is much more important than irc for clanning, in my experience.
that pirate server isn't that bad, I get good pings to it up here in MA.
My recommendation is to join a ventrilo server, get to know some guys on it, and play pubs with them.
  • Curlydave1Curlydave1 Join Date: 2005-02-27 Member: 42685Members
Yep, Rob, that's the one. So you think that if I have ventrillo etc I'll be set even without IRC? I'll have to try the Pirate one. Btw, I'm pinging excellent to all of the ones listed. Oh, and I found the CD problem; For some reason my install was corrupt, so I cleaned it out and redit it and all's well.

I only go on irc for the drama, ventrilo is where clans live now... you just need a few members with irc to schedule.

Most likely they just have a whole slew of commonly used ports blocked. Most university ISPs port block to some degree, but very few acctually block websites/indiviual clients.

Yea, I actually use firefox's chatzilla plugin when I go home. All forms of IRC are blocked as far as I can tell, including mirc and java-based clients. I've found no way to work around this. The same thing applies for P2P. They say they do this to limit bandwidth, which is a legitimate concern. Apparently before people would share lots of files and bog down the university's network. It seems kinda odd though that I can run a 14+ man HL2dm server without any issues. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hey, it looks like there's an added bonus on the Lunixmonster! Remember how I mentioned that I was in a clan/community that dissolved in the first post? Well after just a few games on Lunix, I've ran into 3 people from that group. Coolness.

Hmm, I'll have to try that. I'm finding lots of info on it, but I can't figure out how to actually do it.

If you (or one of your friends) has access to a cable modem/dsl at home and a free computer, then you could set up a proxy server there which could route traffic for you that your college blocks. I don't think your college will care, because you won't be able to use up much bandwidth (maximum is equal to your upload rate, which is often around 128-256kbits/s or 16-32 kbytes/s). IRC and web browsing would run fine on that, but you wouldn't want to download anything. If you encrypt your communications, then your college won't be able to tell what you're doing, so you can get around almost any sort of filter.

Plus, you can sell your proxy server services to other students <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Depending on how its set up
for gamesurge at least, Slim.NY.US.Gamesurge.net port 9960.
Or you can find a server that supports SSL, which uses a port like 9999 and encrypts all your traffic

I was a bit upset when Online Evolution kinda went down the tube.
Ironically, all the older OnEs were leaving about the time, while the founders did the whole MGN thing.

You can go check out MGN if you want, I've talked to a few old OnE buddies here and there, but not much since I dont think OnE has a home, just MGN.

I invite you to play on our server any time, and if so, bring Pumpinator along. I haven't talked to the old chap in ages.
