Take a look at <a href='http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_planet.html' target='_blank'>this tutorial</a> and <a href='http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_star_field.html' target='_blank'>this one</a> which might be able to help you out on both fronts.
And for some kind of example, i made both of the following two images using both the starfield and planet tutorials, and they came out pretty well. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <a href='http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/7997255/' target='_blank'>http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/7997255/</a> <a href='http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/7464712/' target='_blank'>http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/7464712/</a>

Try to get rid of black outline around planet...
And you see the darker parts of bright areas became gray... Do not use burn tool with highlights option... Or do not make shadows with pure black... It will look cooler if you can get rid of that grays; add some red there...
no my host is being **** again got rid of the black outline <img src='http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/reeke/planet286.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

to the image above the last one... it looks like a giant tractor beam is sucking something off the planets surface..
Is that supposed to be reflected light?
Remember planets don't generate their own light and require other light sources (such as suns/stars), if you got rid of that "tractor beam" going out into space on the top-left side.. it would look pretty cool imo..
wow! the last pic looks great! I like the change of the complete color and it looks kinda the galaxy is collapsing <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I really like the cirkels around the planet they are high quality. The rest needs some more glow and darkness I think.
