NS taught me that there are those who will like you, and those who will hate you. Just like anything in life, if someone has a fixed impression of you, they will judge all actions by the initial attribution. I thought things would be a little bit different considering NS is a complicated game and those who have the understanding and intelligence to stick around to learn how to play it competantly would be less likely to prejudge, but that was way off.
NS taught me how to handle "success" in the sense that there are going to be people asking for help because I come from several big name teams. That helped me become a better teacher it all aspects of my life not just NS.
It also taught me how to deal with people who are going to hate you. Which is no big deal really, but its kind of important.
Also NS taught me what I do not want to be when I am older. I do not want to be 30 years old, still playing video games while trying to hold a job. Video games for me is just a hobby, and when I am out of grad school (assuming I get in) I am probably going to stop all together. NS taught me that this is what happens if you let the social addictions of the online world get to you, and you ignore other aspects of life.
As usual, I expect flames, but maybe I will be surprised and see something useful this time.

I played NS the first time about 2 weeks before 2.0 came. Before i wanted to test a new mod (i was a CS player) so i took a look at the mod pages. there i found ns and the specialists. So i chose the specialists (mistake). After about 3 Weeks i got bored of it and downloaded NS.
First i joined a Server where HAs were running around and a hallway was completely clustered with turrets so i had to jump from one turret to another to get through. Before i even saw an alien the HAs told me "GO ALIEN!!!!111!!" so i went alien and died after about 3 seconds.
I thought "WTH?" and left the server. And joined a 3/12 players Server. It was ns_nothing and i was marine with this other guy. So i told him that im noob and he went comm. Sent me to build soem stuff ("press E to build it" ^^). I clustered the base with mines...Afterwards he gave me a JP and an HMG and sent me at the cargo side. there i killed my first gorge. And we shot down the hive. My first day of NS.
It took me a very long time to understand how the Kharaa worked. But finally i understood that the gorge was the builderclass...And then it worked...

I learned of NS when I was playing Counter-Strike on the PAF server, and a girl named Huntress started talking to me about it. So I went to the site, read some of the stuff, downloaded it, and then got into the game. My first map was nancy, and the first time I saw an onos was when I become one for five seconds before a game ended. First fought an onos in eclipse when the marines had pretty good turret farms on both sides of marine starts, and marines were lining up their sights with the doors, and boom, the onos runs in and the blood is flying everywhere from all the turrets but.. he killed me and all of my friends together.
I joined my first game through gamespy, too. ^^; I miss 1.04... does anyone have that 1.04 steam installer and want to go play a game real quick to reminise? ^^;

my first day of NS was a couple years back.. I watched my brothey play a little bit and he let me give it a try... we had 3 hives and I was a skulk... I on accidently blocked an onos (which back then costed a 100 res) and he got on his voice comm and cursed at me for a while... I was only 13 at the time so my little virgin ears were most deffinitly violated
When I first played, it was on ns_tanith (I think) and I remember being marine... and then going around the corner to see a giant alien just stomp, paralyze me, and eat me.
The first game I played was on origin. I distinctly remember building the laser drilling res node, and then being afraid to step into the laser, thinking it might kill me.

My first game was a few days after 2.0 was released. ns_nothing, The Great Viaduct hive.
I read a little about it, and wanted a radical change in my gameplay, so I went Aliens. It looked so cool, but I stunk horridly with all the Aliens, except Lerk.
I loved the ability to fly backwards and sideways, spiking too. I liked the support role since I wasn't too good, and I loved just hiding in an inconspicuous spot killing Marines.

Haven't touched NS since last june, that was when my tenure with serious clan play ended due to real life issues for everyone but me and kuperaye. I loved NS but was saddened by the direction its taken so I haven't played since. Don't get me wrong, NS was and is still one of the best games I have ever played. Only second to FF7.
I play Natural Selection since 2 Days , so i cant remember to the first days of NS. But im happy when i can read that one of you have many experience in NS that is good.

Did someone say they remmeber playing games of ns that they started went to skool and then rejoined the same game when they got home? Those were the BEST !
I want an online game that i can play leave to go somewhere come back and the battles still raging ! I remmeber playing some epic games and people would leave to go out, then come home and ask is this still the same game? and everyone would go yes ! and quickly tell them where we were at, becaue back then even though everything was at a stalemate it felt like the game was on a knifes edge and every actioned you did mattered to the outcome of the game.
What NS has given me 1) Company friends enemies at 2 3 am in the morning 2) A bit of variety in the flooded online FPS market. 3) **** from the ladies who want attention and dont take u playing games instead of seing them too well. 4) hour after hour of wasted potential spent playing games instead =)

I remember being very interested while reading about NS, especially the bits about aliens being able to see each through walls and stuff - that really got me. So I downloaded it; I don't remember which version it was, before 1.04 I think... anyway, my old computer ran it like crap, but I still remember seeing the bitegun sprite in the top right corner and thinking, "Looks like a set of teeth... OH GOD THEY'RE GOING TO EAT ME", then quitting becuase of the poor FPS.
NS was the first game I downloaded when I got my next computer, and that was 1.04, and the map was ns_caged. And now I would be hopelessly addicted, except I have 56k...
I remember more about my clan than I do the game ... it had a dumpy website, crappy forums, no gameserver, and a pocketful of noobs.

Started playing in the early days too. Was introduced to it by members of my old DoD clan. Been reading all these posts. I thought a game I had which lasted 3H was epic! Obviously not! I loved the fact that matches could last that long though. Unfortunatly, on the first server I joined I respawned on the map Eclipse, and walked off the Ip to noticed I just picked up an HMG, not knowing how to drop it then, I got banned from the server ... I started playing NS around early beta4. After reading the instruction manual twice, I finally joined a server. My first map was ns_nothing. I had never seen a ready room, and I thought that just walking through a door to join a team was the best thing since sliced bread. What I didn't realize was that I joined in the middle of a siege against the marine base. I shot a skulk and was like, "they're only that big? I win!" Then I saw an onos... My mind flashed back to the instruction manual... and I was like "O_O OMG O_O OH NOES IT'S GONNA DEVOUR ME!!!!" I ran for dear life, and thinking the onos couldn't reach me if I hid, I jumped in one of the two holes.

I joined the club in the days of NS 1.04 (just released if I remember correct) The onos in those days was actually something to be feared instead the joke its now.
Back then I ran like a lunitic to the closest vent, hoping. Now I run backwards, firing the damn thing. might even die.
It was probably my third game of NS, on eclipse as an alien. Straight off I heard about 3 people scream 'GORGE RUSH!'. Seconds later I looked at the score board and everybody had gone gorge, we managed to build 3 mcs. We all got adrenaline and rushed marine start, those pesky marines didn't stand a chance. Those were the days! D';!
