<div class="IPBDescription">a.k.a the Giant-er Squid.</div> Pretty old news, but because I've only recently learned about these developments, and because of my possibly unhealthy obsession with squid of abnormal size, I felt I needed to post this.
<a href='http://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?ObjectID=3350503' target='_blank'>Colossal Squid.</a>
From everything I've read about this catch, most biologists are pretty certain it's only half-grown or less than that, and it's already larger than many existing giant squid specimen. Instead of suckers on the end of its attack tentacles it wields rows of swiveling razor sharp talons, and it preys on fish that grow larger than most people.

I mean, it's cool, but it's not really anything we haven't seen before - all these "GIANT SQUID FOUND" news entries are just copy pasted from a template, right?

Actually, a new species of squid that could potentially grow 10+ft longer than sperm whales and armored with dozens of spikes lining its tentacles <i>is</i> something we haven't seen before. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I want squids the size of blue whales with super killer death rays and and and ninjas
Poor peesquid.

Hmmm o.k.
*walks away* <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
its a puny squid
You forget though, the flattened squirrel I saw on the road yesterday would make for a delicious meal in some parts of the world too, sadly enough <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Hai.
But then again, I also was waiting for a king-size 1000 feet long squid attacking a nuclear sub... and Ninjas...
"It's only half to two-thirds grown, so it grows up to four metres in mantle length." By comparison, the mantle of the giant squid is not known to attain more than 2.25 metres.

Say... Red Alert 2, anyone?
In all honesty I'd be more scared if they found a giant fish that could easily swallow you in a single gulp. Like a whale-sized shark, or something.

At least...disappointing.

I bet these myths have some truth to them. The dephs of the sea still keep dark secrets.

Every myth, from what I've read, has a grain of truth to them. One report originating from a British Admiralty trawler's crewman describes a squid that was pretty monstrous:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->"As I gazed, fascinated, a circle of green light glowed in my area of illumination. This green unwinking orb I suddenly realized was an eye. The surface of the water undulated with some strange disturbance. Gradually I realized that I was gazing at almost point-black range at a huge squid." Starkey walked the length the of the ship finding the tail at one end and the tentacles at the other. The ship was over one hundred and seventy five feet long. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Another reported incident, again from WWII, describes the survivors of a sunken ship attacked by a giant squid, where one of them was (apparently) killed. It's hard to confirm or deny any of this stuff, though a lot of them seem pretty (very) iffy.
On a more serious note, if I saw a massive squad like.. twice the size of the one in the picture, I'd probably shat my pants clean through, not even a stain, just a hole in my pants. It'd sound like a gunshot, too, and penetrate three meters into the ship's hull.
That is awesome. Having a giant squid type thing jet past a window in ns_europa would have scared the crap out of noob Marines, I can tell you that. Poor europa. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Brings to mind the old maps with "here be monsters" on them.
Peter Benchley - the guy who wrote jaws - saw it coming. Read his book <i>Beast</i>; it describes the creature right down to the talons-instead-of-suckers bit. ^^
Conspiracy!!!!
Didn't they make a movie out of Beast, too? I think I've heard of it.
yeah, you could try serving that up at high class resturants in some of those southern states. Make a fortune.
