People need to quit being so angsty towards vivendi about waiting for HL2 to unlock and realise that they arent to blame for the release fiasco.
The fact that people bought HL2 too early is the shop's fault. The fact that they cant play is Valve's for forcing everyone through Steam (rightly or wrongly). Vivendi manufactor the disks and send them to the shops, they dont control everything.
Vivendi set a release date of nov 16th and made an agreement with Valve that Steam would not unlock the game until this date. So far they havent done anything wrong.
I know it sucks that your payed for the game and blah blah blah, but the whole point of a Worldwide release is to minimise all the BS and piracy that occurs when release dates are staggered (80.000 illegal downloads of Doom3. How many do you think were Europeans just wanting to play it the same time as the rest of the world?)
Guys, he faked the credit card number. You may notice that the image is edited.
What I think will happen is once Steam dies (which DOOM is so convinced is going to happen a few days from now or something) Valve is just going to release a "crack" and say "Go ahead, we're out of business, play our games without authenticating through steam. Go burn those .gcf's and live in happiness forever!"
As if you wont be able to buy Half-Life 2 six or eight years from now for five bucks off the shelves.

The choice i'm presented with is buy the game for $49.95, no box, lots of downloading involved, and i'll get to play it at 8am GMT (I won't be awake then, however), or i could get the game for $48, get the box and properly pressed CDs, and it'll be on my doorstep tomorrow morning. Taking those things into account, why am i either a luddite or box fetishist? I think my choice is quite sensible, really.
Welcome to Awesome, DOOM! Glay you could see past all the crap and make the right decision.
I bought it retail. Even if I had a good connection, I would still have bought it in the box. I'm just used to dropping by Best Buy or EB to pick up a game. Plus I wanted the Collector's Edition (it has some good things, but not completely worthless stuff).

But Steam going down is unlikely to happen, at least IMO.
Half-Life 1: 2004 minus 1998 = 6 years, and it's still kicking. I'd say Steam is safe for a bit longer than that. Also, good job on the steam purchase!
You're forgetting this is the INTRANET™. In 6 or 7 years, whether Steam is still working or not you will be able to download HL2 from somewhere, more than likely legal too. The whole Steam thing kinda proves that the net is getting better for games, and more importantly the provision of games.
