Hey Look At Me

<div class="IPBDescription">ANOTHER Intro Thread</div> Hey everyone, I've been playing HL mods for awhile, and thought now's as good a time as any to get my feet wet in NS. I must say, the game looks really promising, so cudos to those of you involved in its development. But, like all newbtarts, I've got some questions...

1. I've read on here countless times that teamwork is pivitol. No team work and you WILL loose. Now, this sounds like a really great thing, but its been promised to me before in the form of other mods that quote "stress teamwork and cooperation". Needless to say that almost never seems to be the case. So just how much of an impact does teamwork have in "the real world"? Is it one of those rare things whereI have to been on a real class act server, or is it commonplace?

2. No problems with following commands, but just what kind of impact/ control does a Commander have? Will a bad commander cost my team games? Is there any way to counter this?

3. Another thing I'm seeing is that this game has a real community feel. I really like this, and was wondering if there are any perfered servers that I could pick up some worthwhile playing experience at (yes I saw there was a thread on servers that was stickied, I'm going to go real it right now).

Anyways, that's all the rambling I'm willing to type at the moment. Great game, love the idea, yada yada yada, so on and so forth. Thanks.

Well teamwork is usually important, but if you have a good fade or two, your team (the alien one that is) doesn't really have to coordinate that much (just inform each other of important things). If the alien team doesn't have any higher lifeforms, they'll need to work together more to stop the marine's advances. But even if you do have higher lifeform, it's still good to work together since coordinated aliens are very strong and hard to stop. It also depends on what type of chamber the alien team gets, but that is extra info. The marine team needs to work together to get things done since a lone marine usually will die pretty quick. And of course, the marines have to listen to their commander to organize things.

The commander does play an important role. If he's not good, you will lose (only exception is if you have players with a pretty good aim and the aliens aren't that good). The commander needs to know what is going on all the time and has to be able to multitask. The commander also has to be able to react and adapt to how the alien team's strategy changes.

I don't know what type of gameplay experience you're looking for for sure. Some public servers have quite a high skill level. It also depends on how used to the game you are (since some servers expect people who join to know what they're doing, but there are a lot that new people too). I usually play on the Lunixmonster (check my sig), but that is just me and my preference (since I know some people do not like it).

    1) Teamwork may not be rampant on public games ('pubs') but in pick-up games ('pugs') and clan level scrims it is both used and essential.

    2) The commander is essentially 1/2 the marine team - a good one can make a round a snap to win, a bad one can make it very difficult. The best thing I can reccomend is be nice to your comm - don't harass him for guns and whatnot; he is a busy busy person. Do give him information and advice, but always follow his orders.

    3) My suggestion is to play on a lot of servers until you find a few you like. One thing I reccomend is servers that don't stray too far from the game's 'normal' settings. For example, the combat gamemode is balanced around 10 minute matches - servers with 30 minute timelimits etc. don't play well in my opinion.

Teamwork. That's what I love about the mod. Unfortunately, it might take you some time to find it; just don't get discouraged. Find a good server and community and play there regularly.

Thanks for the replies. I'm used to a fairly steep learning curve, and since this isn't the first HL mod I've played I think I should be able to pick it up fairly quickly (as a Marine that is). I suppose I'll be server hopping for awhile before I find my groove on one, but that's fine.

After playing a round or two, I'm notice that Marines really don't last very long on their own. I like that, any game that allows for "Rambo" type players just isn't for me. I've found that leading with the LMG (that is, shooting a bit in front of a moving target) works really well against the smaller, faster aliens (Sulks and those bat things). What kind of hit boxes does the game feature? Is it better for me to go for the skull or their underbelly, or does it matter?

Right now the hitboxes aren't all that great. However, there is some wicked new code going in B6 (IIRC) that overrides HL's hitbox code and allows you to do things like shoot between the legs of an onos, or hit the outstretchind wing of a lerk (the bat things). ^_^

Joev (one of the coders) wrote more on the subject <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83575' target='_blank'>here.</a>

It doesn't matter where you shoot them. It does the same damage anywhere.

There's more to learn in NS than any other game I have played simply because you can be a marine/comm/skulk/gorge/lerk/fade/onos, some people are good with some and not the others. Teamwork is essential of course, and try and play alien to, it will help you understand the game alot more.

Best advice so far. Surf servers, find one where you really click with the players, make friends, and see if they have a site. If they do, become part of the community. Sooner or later, you and a couple buddies will always be present, and pull pub games into pretty fun teamwork games. You dont always have to win, just have fun.
