Opinion Of The 1.04 Rebundle

Bring back the maps!
I recently tried the 1.04 pack put together by Bry (I joined in the 2.01 era) to see how things used to be. I'm certainly glad that things have moved on as NS is certainly a lot more polished now.

The one thing I would like to see though is some of the old ambience which the maps used to have. Going through the maps like eclipse, hera, nothing was quite amazing. There seemed to be so many more cubby holes, dark areas and interesting rooms than the rather bland array we have now.

Welldone for putting it together Bry! Just need 1.04 server now.

If you want to play 1.04 maps, you will need to play 1.04. Those maps would not work with the current version of NS well. Then again, I doubt people still play 1.04, so I can only wish you luck.

Now that I think of it, I see most of the ambience from then in the newer versions as well.

I could well be so used to the current maps that I don't notice the things that make them cool anymore. But regarding lighting and complexity, well it's not quite the same now.

Most of the 1.04 maps are inferior, design wise, to the maps we have today. They're not changed just randomly, you know. There are good reasons for all the changes. A lot of it is due to balance issues. Something may look great, but in actual play you find out that marines or aliens get consistently horribly owned in one area, and you can't leave it like that. Or maybe a res node is way too easy for one team or another to control. Or one hive proves to be horribly inferior to other hives on the map. Or marine start is impossible for aliens to assault. Or, alternatively, way too easy for them to assault.

And yes, the maps were a bit more 'atmospheric' back then, but that was mostly due to being basically darker. And although dark is OK in a single player game, in multiplayer games it's usually just an annoyance. So you get maps that look dark without being really dark, and people are happy. Not that the old 1.04 era maps aren't great maps, and I salute the original mappers for making the first steps into mapping for a game whose balance had yet to even be determined. But I'll take the evolved, balanced versions any day.

I've decided that 1.04 is too buggy to play, and heavily system-intensive compared to 3.0

I think there's a good reason why many people don't play 1.04 still.

I have the 1.04 versions of Eclipes, Nothing, Tanith, and Hera running on my Classic server (See my sig for IP). The are fun to play once in awhile, but like Bob said, they tend to be unbalanced, especially Nothing and Hera.

That is one map change I would support. All the newer people call me a moron when I call Mother hive No Name...

It hurts my self esteem. =[

i will never call it "mother hive". there was so much more mystery/aura/magic around "noname" hive.

Which is partly due to the maps, but if you're playing them on purpose then I think you'd be able to look past that part.

Muahaha. Now the shoe is on the other hand, for all of you 'noname' people. Know how it felt to call it 'Mother' back then, as one of the few who'd been clued in to what happened and what the real name was. Suffer large!

We still have a 1.04 server up here :

    67.18.228.164:27012

You can also download the 1.04 maps for 3.0 here

just remember that the onos will get stuck quite abit when you try to uprgade. You really need the stuck plugin on a server in order to play these maps

The only reason I called it Noname was because of Mother Interface. I tried to use Mother for the hive and Interface for MI but each time I said go to Mother, half the team went to MI while we were losing Mother Hive

Playing 1.04 maps on 3.0 seems to me to be a self-induced masochism.

Actually, playing 1.04 at all seems to be self-induced masochism.

I love it how 3.0 is so much better in balance, in atmosphere, and in performance. And when it's released people grumble about it and go back to playing the unstable and buggy nonsense they're used to.
