World Series Thread
<div class="IPBDescription">Red Sox vs. Cardinals</div> So the first game was last night and I actually screwed up my entire schedule for the weekend because I thought the first game was Sunday.
That was a hell of a game. Both the Red Sox and the Cards had their bats going, which wasn't that much of a surprise since both of them are the top run-producing teams in their respective leagues. I'm going to go point by point over various things, because I like lists.
1.) I love Foulke. That man is seriously one of the best guys we have in the bullpen. He pitched for 1 and 2/3 innings and got 3 strikeouts for the win. He's an insane closer.
2.) Bellhorn continues to surprise with his third home run in as many games, winning it for the Sox. He's become the quintessential clutch player, but he still sucks when the pressure isn't on.
3.) Why the hell did they keep Wakefield in so long? When you load the bases by walking, that's a pretty good sign that you need to get him out of there. Arroyo did need some time to warm up, but damn.
4.) Manny, Manny, Manny... why you gotta be like that, baby? I love your bat, but sometimes you just make me so angry. Why you gotta make me throw my hat at the television? Catching popups isn't that hard, so why you gotta make two errors back-to-back? Now get out there and swing that moneymaker.
5.) Big Papi!!1 Anybody who says something bad about Ortiz will be shredded by the overwhelming force of my rage. And possibly a woodchipper. That man can hit so well. The only thing I'm worried about is his fielding abilities since they'll probably put him on first when they're in St. Louis. There's no way they're going to leave him out of the lineup when they're away.
With the Sox up 1-0, I think that the Sox will win again tonight. They have the momentum and the homefield advantage. Virtually all of the Sox hit much better at home and the Boston crowd isn't an easy one for away teams. I think that the series is going to be won and lost in pitching and I think that the Sox have the advantage there.

yeah, I thought the errors were pretty bad. But the TV only showed for a second a SECOND error on a single play made at third base. After Manny fell over trying to catch that ball, he threw it to third.... but the third baseman dropped it too!! It wouldn't have been a run if the third baseman had got it and thrown it to home (remember, the catcher almost got him out)

...Ortiz is cool. Damon (or is it Damion?) is cool too, except he needs to shave and get a haircut or something. Plus he was 3 for 23 during the NYY v Sox series...up until that last game with the grand slam and the other home run...

Id trade big hits for defense. Put pokey in. Too many non-plays that will end up to cost the sox a game or 2.
I say Sox all the way, but in 5 games.. not 4. ;-)
I pray they win tonight, because I'm horrified by the prospect of Ortiz at first. The right side is going to be WIDE open. They better break out to a 10-0 lead each game so they can put Millar or Mientkiewicz in as soon as humanly possible.
That said, I do hate the 2-3-2 home layout for playoffs. I much prefer 2-2-1-1-1.

for 252 million he didnt have to slap that guy like a hoe. Use that 252 million to get faster and get some real skill.
Maybe. The Cards are known for their crushing offensive power and I don't think that the difference between Pokey and Bellhorn is enough to justify taking Bellhorn out. This is going to be a high-scoring series and Bellhorn's been performing at the plate and doing well enough in the field. I'm not sure that defense at second is going to be what wins it.

Unlike the Bellhorn-Pokey thing, I agree. He's hella slow and the Cards have been ripping them down the right side line. Ortiz is all about hitting the ball. He's the DH for a reason and I hope that Francona remembers that.
I still think that pitching is going to decide the series. I think the bullpens are nearly equal, but Boston has much better starters with Pedro, Schilling and Lowe. Wakefield did alright for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised if Arroyo got his next start, depending on how much they tap him for relief.
Boston has the bats and the throwing to win it. St. Louis isn't well known for its all-star pitching staff. Here's hoping that Boston starts killin' with Schillin'.

There are a couple Canadian teams. ^^
You have the national league and the american league (with the only distinction I'm aware of being the difference in the DH rule), they each get a champion and then the champions go to the world series.
While it is mostly American there are 2 Canadian teams (although, I think Montreal is losing its team this season). I think it would make more sense to have the American winners play against the Japanese as the world series (maybe with the Dominicans as well).
The problem is that the baseball players and team owners are terrible (ethically, not phyiscally). They're greedy, and they'd never get to actual 'world play'. Probably the reason for a pretty big falling out in support for baseball in the last few years...and so, [American] Football is more popular (and seems quite a bit more stable). Plus there's not really many big powerhouses in football since the salary cap.
Man, this is it. This is our year. I've been waiting 22 years for this.
We just went into Cardinal territory and put 'em down like Old Yeller. Pedro pitched a fantastic game. K'd 6 and didn't give up a single run. He retired 14 batters in a row. That's impressive, and not just for Sox fans.
Then Manny made up his two error game by catching that popfly and gunning it straight to home for the double play. Add that to his homerun, and he's back in favor with everybody.
Foulke actually gave up a run. Statistically, it was bound to happen sometime. He still struck out two of the four batters he faced. Francona has been making superb use of the bullpen. That bullpen is like a well-oiled machine that just keeps knocking birds off the wire.
Tomorrow, we shut the Cardinals down on their turf. It shall be a glorious day for baseball and my beloved Boston Red Sox can declare to the world what her fans already know. That the Red Sox are indeed the greatest team ever to play the game.
"We're being set up" we said, almost in unison. "This is just so it hurts that much more when we lose."
Such is the mentality of a lifelong Red Sox fan.
However, I'm sick of all this curse crap, so the Red Sox should win so the media have their one year of 'The curse is broken!' and then they shut up about it. Pffft.
...Otherwise, I'd actually slightly favor the Cardinals...but either way makes little difference to me.
