JoeV please respond
Well ladies and gents TAK and I discussed this and I now know I'm not the only person seeing the frequent crashing of the "NSF" as it is called.
I have seen this exact same thing happen before with another forum durring a time of mass spam and lockage and the problem was solved when the massive "general forum" (kinda like our Off Topic and General forums combined with 20 times more complaints) was pruned and then the traffic reduced after KO died.
I know we have a no delete policy and in certain forum like the new and fixed I&S we must not delete the locked topics (so we can reference) but I think we all can agree that much of what is said in the Off Topic and General forums is spam stuff with a thread life time of only a few days. I have sent 3 e-mail to the forum "admin" and have seen no result despite volunteering to prune thouggh all of the last 5-10 pages of the OT and Gen forums.
Now here's what TAK has to say:

another issue I want to address is the fact that this should belong in general discussion as it is pertanint to natural selection, so before people start saying phase I want to nip that in the bud
Only once....
How to fix, idk since im not all that great with mySQL and php
still though, with this type of forum, 5 pages should be the max.
for all sections, cept maybe I&S
[edit]

Florian "NemesisZero" Schwarzer be kind enough to give us a time frame on this?
~edit~
I confirm that TAK. Crashed at 14:50-ish and resumed at 15:00 (EST)
PS: anyone want to keep a record of the times it crashes at?

I'm trying to recall the most recent major things done to the forums which may have affected the database...things as major as the mass pruning of 0-post accounts I did some time back...
Most of the things I can bring to memory are obviously things I can't talk about much in public. Mentally narrowing down what sort of things could cause these errors, I've come to the conclusion that:
Possibility 1: we should be patient at least one week
and/or
Possibility 2: I've been purposely left in the dark about something happening behind the scenes, which happens quite often even to Admins for various reasons I'm in complete agreement with.
The process of taking backups (to upload to the other server) pretty much hogs the database connections.
While it's ugly, it's necessary.
All will be finished soon, just have patience and bear with us.
joe.
