Congratulations. I'm very proud of you. However, it's not like it's going to be challenging to find a copy of HL2 when it comes out, and buying through Steam won't get you the game any quicker... I fail to see how people who already pre-purchased the game through Steam can claim to be superior to those who bought it the traditional way.

Yes, it will.

Steam:
1) One or two files download.

So what, 10 minutes? A half hour? There's no guarantees that Steam won't suddenly say "oh look, you have to download another 500 megs of information!", either. Both ways of purchasing have their downsides, both have their advantages. Bragging about how you alone have the foresight to buy through Steam and all of us who want the retail box and manual are somehow less intelligent because of it is ridiculous.

we've downloaded the vast majority of the game already, maybe a couple more sound files or models, the dlls and exe won't take long.

edit: it is because of this preload that steam is not likely to go down, especially since the steam servers were throttled way back for the preloads.

you DO realise that depending on how the CDs are set up, you may STILL have to DL it on steam if you want updates and stuff?

(that happened to my brother with CZ, it said that it copied the files from his installation folder, but actually didnt, and had to DL the cache files)

and steam isnt crashy (for me anyway <_< >_>)

For me it will be:

Steam: wait for exams to finish, download off ISP's ftp page, activate with non existent/someone elses credit card, play.

Retail: Finish last exam, on way home pick up copy. Get home, install, play.

Steam does have better packages, and retail has the actual packages + cds.

Can anyone else confirm this:

I just restarted steam for the hell of it, and it reconnected then said "Unlocking HL2 files". Then when I clicked on HL2, it started a preload at 99.7%, and I'd already preloaded.

Is anyone else getting this?

EDIT: Well, the preload finished...and it just said I could play the game when it was released. *sigh*.

I thought the .gcf files could be copied and distributed freely?

Oh you mean the credit card thing? Elaboration: I don't have one, I will have to get someone else (brother, parent, friend) to buy it for me and pay them.

I'm willing to bet money on the fact that Steam will go down and nobody will be able to play HL2 on November 16th.

Also, when all the nerds who trusted Steam from the beginning are complaining about Steam being down and they can't pre-load that last 200mb, those of us who advocated not taking it up the arse will be laughing. We will have our day!

They're already using more bandwidth than the entire of Italy, i don't quite think it'd be that easy.

EDIT: Steam has gone down on a great number of occasions and for minor things, this is Half-Life 2, the most anticipated game of the past year or two, if anything will kill Steam, this will.
