The days prior to the release I'm going to be sitting in my sofa with only my boxers on and repeatedly whispering in an ominous way "It's coming." Or maybe I should start right away...

Kind of kicking myself for buying HL2 Silver package... I was curious about CS:S (and I also wanted to get HL and DoD Source later on), but all in all I think I'd rather have gotten HL2 in box. :|

    That said, I can't wait <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Praying Valve will unlock HL2 on Steam at midnight for us...

I'm betting they'll unlock it as soon as legally possible. If it's already gold, they'd be unlocking it right now but no doubt Vivendi is forcing them not to until they can get their boxed copies onto the shelves. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I hope that they release it earlier than it hits retail shelves.

Maybe more people will buy it from Steam if they release it a few days early. That means I'll win.

I refuse to believe. I will continue doubting half-life 2's existence right up til I'm halfway through playing the game, shouting "It's a trick, damnit! It's just a mod of Far Cry with three levels and spiced up HL-1 models! Why won't anyone believe me?"

        * Will it be possible to port content from Half-Life 1 to Half-Life 2?

We’ve made this as painless as we could...Almost all parts of the HL2 SDK will be a little bit familiar to those who have worked with the HL1 SDK. Of course, there are a lot of new features, options, and systemic changes to explore, but overall the modding experience for HL2 is very similar to HL1.

        * Will the HL2 SDK include tools to help convert HL1 content to HL2?

Yes, the HL2 SDK will include several tools for this; for example, taking a WAD file and converting its contents to the new material format. Details and tips about converting HL1 code and content to HL2 will also be included.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

It takes more than a day to port an entire game over to another engine, you tool. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'm very disappointed that they are providing conversion tools for the content.

    Why?

Because HL1 stuff in HL2 will still look the same. a 128x128 texture is still 128x128. People need to go and find the 2048x2048 (or whatever) version or make a new texture if they can. Same with models, skins, and sound effects.

Glad the code is supposed to be familair though. I sure hope they cleaned up some of the headaches though. :X
  • RyoOhkiRyoOhki Join Date: 2003-01-26 Member: 12789Members
Yeah Doom makes a good point. In CS-Source, many of the textures still look like HL1 textures, which makes maps a heck of a lot less prettier than they should be. Still, HL2's code could allow Flayra and the gang to put in features they want and fix up old bugs caused by forcing the HL1 engine to do stuff it never wanted to do. And create 100 new bugs in the process. But hey, that's programming.

i doubt most people are going to be using the texture conversion tool id say the main tool in use will be code conversion because why completely recode something when you can convert it?
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
chance that code conversion will ACTUALY work?

    yah, right.

Chance that it would probably simply be faster to recode it all instead of having to bug hunt through code that is only SORTA yours?

    yah.

Unless it can simply take old HL1 SDK stuff and make it work exactly the same.

Eh, how is it dissapointing? Mod teams who were previously working away on HL1 can now upgrade to source and have an extremely solid base on which to create new content. Granted, Source wont magically make a HL1 mod have Hl2-level graphics, but its a damn sight easier than making it from stratch. Im sure Valve will figure a way to make it easy to replace all low res textures with the 2x or 4x equivalents without the need for realignment. Also most of the details are done with models (even those large sections of broken walls as shown <a href='http://www.halflife2.net/media/albums/userpics/10001/striderattack4.jpg' target='_blank'>here</a> ) which can be easily placed over the top of your raw bsp brush geometry.

Also, it means HL1 mods can be played by those who own HL2 but not HL1.

    Valve is being very smart with their HL2 SDK being able to update HL1 mods;

It's called <b>backwards compatibility</b>, lets name a few other systems that succesfully emply this tactic to secure mad sales:

    - Gameboy systems
    - Playstation
    - PC
  • DOOManiacDOOManiac Worst. Critic. Ever. Join Date: 2002-04-17 Member: 462Members, NS1 Playtester
To say HL2 is backwards compatible w/ HL1 is a bit too much.

After all, you can take any Gameboy game, plug it into a GBA, and it'll work just fine.

But with HL1->HL2, the content has to be changed, and when you're going to do that you really may as well re-create it from scratch, as it'd only be about twice the effort more to get something that is much more than 2x as good...

No, you can convent and have it perfectly playable without new content. HL:S uses all the old textures and models for example. Not all conversions have to be the complete makeover CS:S is.

Besides if mod teams decide they do want high res content they can easily add it over the top while in meantime contining to playtest with the old stuff. If you do everythign from stratch you dont have this luxury.
  • DOOManiacDOOManiac Worst. Critic. Ever. Join Date: 2002-04-17 Member: 462Members, NS1 Playtester
You can't dl a HL1 mod, put it in HL2's directory, and have it work. That's what backwards compatibility would be. But that won't happen.

Content must be converted, which as I just said in my last post, you may as well make new content.

And none of the code can be converted. Yes, the code will be familiar, but things will have to be re-written.

And if you have to redo it anyway, why not take the extra time to make it look good?
  • eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
    Following Doom's logic:

Doom: "Oh, Timmy, you can't enter your car in this race yet.. you have to give it a new paintjob"
Timmy: "A new paint job? Screw that, i'm just going to go make the car from scratch again"

    Doom, what about Half-life Source?

They didnt redo the content for that, i doubt they recoded it. They will have worte programs which automate the process. Source was made from the ground up to make it as easy as possible.
