    Important note. Brittan runs on a parlamentary system, which simply means they dont choose who holds executive office. They vote for the people who vote for the person who gets the position.

    People usually complain that we use a electorial college and how 'un-democratic' it is to elect the president. Countries who use parlamentary systems don't directly choose who gets executive powers.

    People also complain about the 2 party system.. Ehh.... never mind, thats another debate..

    Have a nice day.

    In your plea to get your non-American readers to write to voters in Clark County, Iowa, you are correct that events in the US have had, and will have, effects on world events. For example, we have pulled your chestnuts out of the fire in two world wars that were occasioned by European diplomacy. Maybe you'd like a vote in which American president will oversee the next rescue. The next time you have elections in Great Britain, I shall endeavour to send names of your citizens to people in France, Iraq, India, the United Arab Emirates, Botswana, Pakistan, China and Argentina so that they may attempt to influence your election. It's only fair that everybody in the world should have a say in the selection of the prime minister.

    Seriously though this guy calls Bush nuts? The body of his article is ether insulting to Bush or Americans in general, the rest talks about that stupid bulge in Bush's suit. Then to top it all off he suggests Bush should be assassinated.

    What a nut job, I'm all for sending in those Navy Seals now. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    It's called satire. Or hyperbole. Take your pick; you either didn't get or refused to acknowledge either.
  • othellothell Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4183Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    Satire? No.

    Hyperbole? I don't think so either.

    The tone of the article does not lend itself to either conclusion.

    Maybe the author just thought it would be funny... Please forgive me if I don't see the humor in such things.

    Doesn’t satire normally have to be <i>funny</i>? As for exaggerations, plenty of those, but if I want to read lame exaggerations I'll go to FOX and click on an article about Bush's poll numbers. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Don't try and defend this guy, it wasn't funny, it wasn't even sane, unless you find not-so-subtle hints at the assassination of the president to be hilarious satire.

    I think that article is called bad taste

    Why, that article was quite funny actually. Just because you can't laugh at somebody who you adore so much that you have to put him into your signature and rub it into everyone's face doesn't mean normal people can't either.
  • WheeeeWheeee Join Date: 2003-02-18 Member: 13713Members, Reinforced - Shadow
    oohhh, eggmac, that was evil, the subtle implication that bush supporters aren't "normal people."

    if i had the "i see what you did there" picture, i'd post it, because that was very tricky.

    TBH, the article is not funny at all (even if he meant it entirely as a joke).

    On the other hand, the responses generated by the article are. So I suppose it would be defensible to call it funny.

    Well at least I have a sig, although the text telling everyone how your sig image was too big is quite appealing. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Trust me, I laugh at Bush all the time, it's unavoidable, but this was just anger and hatred poorly disguised as an insult to satire.
    I don't care who the president is, be it Bush or Kerry, wishing an assassination upon that person is insulting to not only the president but the American people.
    This isn't funny in any way shape or form, if you laughed at this you need some help, or a new sense of humor.
  • ForlornForlorn Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2634Banned
    If you laughed at that it proves your bias and favor towards anti-americanism :/

    Seriously I would never ask for a country's leader to be shot unless I really hated the said country

    Bad Taste++

    Speaking of which, I guess the guardian realized that it's not too smart to ask for the president to be <a href='http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguide/tvradio/story/0,14676,1335307,00.html' target='_blank'>killed.</a>

    I know this thread is old, dead, and moot; but I thought I would post a resolution - What happened in Clark County - how successful was the Guardian.

    Now, this excerpt is pulled from Rush Limbaughs site - but I found it to be insiteful none the less.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The left-wing newspaper, The Guardian, targeted one county, one swing county in one swing state, invited readers to send one on one letters to independent American voters. And more than 11,000 Guardian readers responded, but the letter-writing campaign enraged Clark County residents who replied with letters of their own denouncing the Brits as stupid yellow toothed pansies. When Tuesday's votes were tallied, remember, Gore won Clark County, Ohio, by 324 votes. After Tuesday's votes were counted, Bush won Clark County by 1,620 votes over Kerry. In fact, Bush's vote total in Clark County this year, 34,444 was 25% higher than his 2000 total of 27,660. Nowhere among the Gore counties in Ohio did more votes move from the blue to the red column than in Clark County, directly attributable to the outsider-attempted influence of a British newspaper. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    It's funny that the Guardian did have an effect on the US elections after all (if not quite what they wanted).

    Such a vicious reaction by Americans to their beloved British allies..how dare someone meddle with American politics, but America can meddle with anyone else's politics the poorer and browner the country is the better....aaahh such irony. Being a Bush supporter I knew he'd come off best in that situation, still funny to read the rednecks goin nuts about it though.
