Directx Hates Me

<div class="IPBDescription">Save me?</div> Yah, it seems that anytihng that runs in full screen and uses directX crashes my computer (full on frozen lockup, sound loop and all).

I can play other things (like HL still works b/c I use OGL), however this cuts out ALOT of my games, and I would love a fix.

things I have tried:
1) Update/roll back drivers. (currently ussing ForceWare 66.81)
2) Update DirectX (was at 9.0b, now at c, I know that people said c was bad, but I was desperate)

When ever I try and run dxdiag everything says it is okey, however if I try to run either the directDraw or the Direct3D tests it crashes as soon as I hit a fullscreen test.

SysSpecs:
Windows 2K
Geforce4 Ti 4200
AMD 1.1 gig
512 ram
ABIT mobo (KT7 I think)

does any one have any soloutions for me?

please?

From my experience, OpenGL is way more solid than DirectX, si it wouldnt surprise me it's acting up <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Uhh, when/how did the mess begin?

well, yes, OpenGL does tend to performe better, thus why I use it where I can, alot of games use D3D however

    As for when it began.

I had run into the problem before and had thought I had fixed it (don't remember how). It just started showing up again recently when I switched off of playing HL for a little while.

I spent a few days trying to fix DirectX problems to no avail. Ended up formatting, it did the trick.

    Bah!

don't feel like doing a full format just before I upgrade my computer (as I always format with hardware upgrades)

    hmph

    on the note of formats:
I have never had a computer with 2 harddrives before (always just used one big one) so I have never done a format with 2 HDDs.

I am assuming I will end up needing to format both drives? (as all my installed programs will probably die once my registry is gone)

    yes?

    System Restore.

If it just started giving you problems, restore your computer to like...2 weeks before and you should be set.

Too bad, you cannot uninstall the DirectX API's without a format. There is however an experimental program which can be found on guru3d.com that apparently can uninstall Direct X. This however is not reccomended.

I just did a quick format. It takes something like 5 minutes.

Formatting doesn't take long. Reinstalling windows doesn't take long. Reinstalling apps, drivers, and little tiny programs that you found somewhere and forgot to back up but can't live without takes a while.

This problem sounds eerily familiar however. My comp does it too, but only when I have EAX sound enabled (CURSE YOU CREATIVE YOU POS COMPANY) but I can't get any sound card EXCEPT an audigy so I guess I'm stuck with it... bleh.

Try toying with everything, such as sound settings, FSAA, AF, etc... and see if it makes any difference perhaps...
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
I doubt that EAX has anything to do with this (naimly as it comes up with the dxdiag tests, where there is no sound)

    then again

my mic did randomly stop playing through headphones recently (unless I turn on one of the EAX effects.....)

    /me goes and pokes.

oh, and if yall want to help me out some more, help me with my new computer <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Oh, and as Dorian pointed out.

Backing up a hundred or so gigs of data takes a while, so I am going to start that untill I get my new components <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It probably takes longer to back up and then reinstall then to just make a list and redownload <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

well seeing how as many of my things are of questionable legality, they must be backed up instead of redownloaded.

You could shift anything important on to your second drive, then format, then shift everything back to the first drive and format the second drive?

    Just a quick, probably-obvious note:

Do not, under any circumstances attempt to uninstall directx. The fact that it requires a 3rd party program to do so should probably have given me the idea that it was a bad idea, but no.

Thank god for idiot-proof windows XP.

unfortunatly DirectX is DESIGNED to not be able to be unistalled, thus if something does break (and things DO BREAK nomatter how well designed the software is) you are SCREWED.

    Welcome to my world <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

so right, about the format thing?
I am gona need to format both drives right?

And as for backing stuff up, I have a 2nd computer that I was able to get almost everything on to, just going to have to RAR and burn my dowloads directory, and my AMVs, and my Music
