Support Analyst for a US DSL/dialup ISP. Pay is good, but like any another phone support job, the customer is always an idiot. The second I hit anything better, I'll drop it.

I'm a fulltime student at university, but I also do some amateur modeling and occasional work for a Japanese comics retailer, as well as senior staff for a couple of anime/gaming conventions.
The modeling is fine - I get flown out, so it's a weekend away from the usual monotony and I get paid, so it's all good. The comic retailer work is okay... it's fun when I work a booth at cons because I love my coworkers and the environment, and my boss is a dear - she gets me all sorts of stuff from Japan, all I have to do is ask. I don't have to deal with most of the actual hardcore logistics stuff so the work as con staff is fun too. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I work for Royal Mail sorting letters/packets and unloading articulated lorries.
The pay is great especially if I work nights but it can get very repetative sometimes but i can get away with wearing an mp3 player so it works out good. Love work. Far more interesting than college, and I get paid to do it. Pay is decent considering I'm only part time and don't have a degree yet, hopefully when(if) I go full time there after I graduate I'll be making lots more. I'm getting sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck.

Also this weekend some lady gave me $20 to explain that A) An object thrown upwards at a certain velocity will fall back down at the same velocity when it comes back to its starting position, and B) How to calculate the amount of time such an object stays in the air. I think that was the easiest 20 bucks I've ever made. The lady was also like "can you tutor my sped daughter who couldn't figure this out." So naturally I'm like money? $.$

The only downsides are the pressure, the occasional uncertainty, and taxes (it doesn't matter <i>who</i> is in office-- I get <i>violated</i>), but for the freedom to work whenever I want-- and take as much time off as my workload allows-- it's certainly worth it.

Don't. Worst place you could ever decide to get an education. You will hate it. Go somewhere else. Anywhere. The food sucks, the weather sucks, the air sucks, and the football team sucks. You will hate it. It will hate you. Remember Hellraiser? yeah its a bit like that.
If you choose to ignore the above advice the Academy might be for you. The point is, if you have any doubts whatsoever do not go. If you are truly serious then there probably isn't any better way of getting a good start in the AF short of enlisting first and then becomming an officer. I left on a medical(migraine headaches) and transferred to PSU. PM me if you want some insider info or help getting ready/accepted.

I don't actually do anything interesting, just customer service crap (which normally isn't too bad) and whatever menial tasks the management doesn't feel comfortable asking anyone else to do. (Like washing all the sweat-soaked towels)
Up to 2 weeks ago, I used to do mainframe application support for 10 application running in a multitude of environements like Online transactions running on IMS, CICS, MQ Series and about 4000 daily batch jobs running.
But now thanks to someone on the top level, the company decided to close our department and replace it with a contract in India. I was doing support in there for 7 years.
It's now behind me as I am now in another departement working on Voice Ove IP products.

Reader's Digest summary: I ended up as a software engineer at a large financial company, got into flash 4.0, got lured away by a creative agency, made a lot of contacts, solidified some freelance partnerships, built a solid portfolio, and then made the offical leap after we landed a pretty large gig on the freelance side.
My advice: Wear a lot of hats, and practice as much as possible. Get your hands on whatever software you can and tear into it in your spare time (this is not a tacit call for warez; you should be able to locate educational licenses on the cheap for most software, or limited demos). You have no idea how valuable you can become as a resource if you are proficient in numerous concepts and technologies across the creative spectrum-- especially if you can straddle the chasm between art and programming.
And don't be afrad to take a crappy job, if it'll give you solid industry experience, or access to technology/equipment that would otherwise be out of your reach. Really, just look for the opportunity to build a strong portfolio. It doesn't matter how low profile the work is-- it's all about the product.

I work at Gamestop. Free games, crappy pay, and a mediocre boss. I'm probably going to get promoted in a couple weeks though, so then the pay will be decent and I'll actually have responsibilities instead of just coming in, ringing people up and cleaning the store. The fact that I can sign anything in the store out for 4 days makes it all worthwhile, though.
I'm 15, I have a part time job shelving books at the library. When I hit 16 I'll change jobs, but ATM it's a good job, decent pay, I just got a raise, work hours are flexible and it's a good place. It beats flipping burgers like the rest of my schoolmates.

Anyways my regular job is working at Max & Erma's on the weekend (for only 10 hrs. per week I make ~$340 per month) I'm almost 20 so I'll be looking to change to bartender and get better pay and prob work somewhere else.

Reader's Digest summary: I ended up as a software engineer at a large financial company, got into flash 4.0, got lured away by a creative agency, made a lot of contacts, solidified some freelance partnerships, built a solid portfolio, and then made the offical leap after we landed a pretty large gig on the freelance side.
My advice: Wear a lot of hats, and practice as much as possible. Get your hands on whatever software you can and tear into it in your spare time (this is not a tacit call for warez; you should be able to locate educational licenses on the cheap for most software, or limited demos). You have no idea how valuable you can become as a resource if you are proficient in numerous concepts and technologies across the creative spectrum-- especially if you can straddle the chasm between art and programming.
And don't be afrad to take a crappy job, if it'll give you solid industry experience, or access to technology/equipment that would otherwise be out of your reach. Really, just look for the opportunity to build a strong portfolio. It doesn't matter how low profile the work is-- it's all about the product.

PSU I graduated from in May.

Anyways my regular job is working at Max & Erma's on the weekend (for only 10 hrs. per week I make ~$340 per month) I'm almost 20 so I'll be looking to change to bartender and get better pay and prob work somewhere else.
