Sound Modes

From 5.1 surround to Stereo
Alright, Now, Im wondering. I've got 2 sound cards. 1 is the onboard nForce2 audio. Supports 5.1 surround sound. I also have a PCI Soundblaster 512 which apparently does NOT support it but does actually run it successfully for whatever reason.

Anyway onto the question. I'd prefer to use whichever sound mode will squeeze out the best performance In games. Will surround sound have an impact versus stereo? Will using unboard be better performance wise or the PCI card be less stressful?

only 5.1? they have up to 8.1 if I recall correctly

moreover, if you can do it right, do the surround sound. But when it comes to competitive play, grab a nice pair of headphones >:D

Im not sure whether this is correct or not, but I was under the impression that sound cards work in a similar way to video cards. Being that their one and only purpose was to do video or sound. Basically you use them to keep the stress of doing this task off your processor and since they are only made to do that one job, they can do more advanced versions of it. (5.1 sound, etc). So I guess what im saying is that, changing this will not effect your performance. Because everything that has to do with the sound is done completely on the sound card, and nowhere else. And since all that card does is the sound, it can do as many complicated things as it wants, without effecting anything else.

I think I started rambling, but whatever.

    not true really.

i have an external Audigy2, on UT2004 i get a massive drop in framerate when I change from 3d sound to Hardware EAX.

    sound settings effect framerates!

    OT: dunno

More sound effects stress the cpu more. It's not like the soundcard could do ALL the job on their own. The more soundeffects you want the more the cpu has to work.
