Boot Into Msdos

Is there any possible way to get MSDOS on my hard disk under windows XP? I need to do some tinkering through DOS but I do not have a floppy drive OR a free CD-R disk. Any ideas?

DOS isnt installed with Win XP, since XP dosent need to to run. You'll probably just have to find a download somewhere for DOS and do Multi-Boot.

It can, however, emulate it: you could just goto Start ---> Run ----> and type command

    You don't have a floppy drive. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Isn't it one of the options if you stab F8 twice before the Windows XP loading bar appears?

    Pray?

Seriously, W/O any type of removable media I don't know of any solutions that are able to be posted in non book form.

If the standard command prompt wont do it for you, then you will need to boot into a different OS. The methods of which are lengthy.

edit: Possible point of failure. Make sure that your HD is not formatted for NTFS or other 'advanced' filesystem. MSDOS does NOT support NTFS so even if you managed to get it on your computer, you would have a heck of a lot of issues when trying to run anything.

I am not sure if DOS supports FAT32 either. I think the win98 version of it does but I cannot be sure.

Does your motherboard support boot from USB and you have a USB flash stick?

ahh good if you know how to do that then you have already done the hard part.

Now the trick is getting an MSDOS install onto that partition. I suggest a website bootdisk.com I think its called.

    <a href='http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;104429' target='_blank'>Installing MS-DOS Version 6.2x After Windows NT or Later Is Installed</a>

    <a href='http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm' target='_blank'>boot disks</a>
See if you can get the boot disk installation program to go to your new partition.

I think I just achieved the impossible. Using several programs and an open source version of DOS. I used Partition magic to create a FAT partition (logical) Then used a program called bootuse to allow me to choose to boot from C:/ (physical drive) and E:/(logical drive) I copied the DR-DOS files to E:/ by downloading a floppy image, then extracting the image using Win-Image. I just copied the program I needed to run and here we go...hope it works.

holy crap what are you trying to do?

you can get boot to command prompt floppies at bootdisk.com and you can get them in CD format too, for computers without floppy drives. you reallly dont need to mess with partition data at all. and why would you want to mess with dos anyway? to play old games, <a href='http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1' target='_blank'>get a free dos emulator</a>, (i use that for hexen and simant)

I said I don't have any CD-RS or removeable media I could boot from, and its not for a game, its for a program called amset which disables/enables acoustic management for hard disks, and because it severely hampers my drive I want to disable it. (It slows the seek headers so it can be quiet)

i missed the part about no cd-rs.

so you have no writable cds, no floppy drive anywhere in the house, and a non bootable usb drive. wow.

you need a cd burner, eh? i got one at a rummage sale the other day for four dollars..

once you do, look up something called Hiren's BootCD. it's a collection of a lot of great data recovery and hardware diagnostics with a bootable menu.

All I need is a single CD-R but im poor and have no money and the local store has no floppies. This is a hell <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Oh well, I guess I need to wait. My leet haxoring didn't work. Kept on asking for a system disk (even though its files are on the logical drive)
  • ZelZel Join Date: 2003-01-27 Member: 12861Members
you would need to set the logical drive to bootable by specially formatting it with some extra dos-files

sorry i dont know the specifics off hand. but do read around Bootdisk.com it may be of use.

Make sure that the hidden files are on the drive as well.

That has to be one of the only downfalls of XP that I can think of. No DOS!

I mean sure, you can simulate DOS, but that doesn't help when windows doesn't boot up. *sobs quietly*
