Please help me!
I was thinking of posting this in the tech support area, but I thought it was only for getting NS running so... I thought this forum would be the best area.
Problem: I am trying to install a headset that uses both mic and sound, but my mic port is in the back and my headset port is in the front of the tower under that lower flap. In the back, there is a green port and a black port for sound which my speakers used to use. I plug in the sound cord of my headset into the green port and there is no sound. I tried changing configs in the master sound board thing. I tried unmuting whatnot. No luck.
Question: Can headphones use the green port meant for speakers instead of the port with the headset icon on it?
If you can help me, it would help very much. They intended to make headphones easier to use by putting it on the front... but the fact is how is the mic cord supposed to get from the front to the back? My computer is a dell 4550.

Long Answer: They should work the exact same. If they don't then is the sound board itself working right? Is your headset turned down? There's really little to no variation in the plugs you use, but it is possible so just compare it to your speakers. I imagine your speakers came with it?
Your best bet is to buy a $15 SBLive card and use that. I have a similar computer right under me (yay for crappy work computers) and I imagine you're using the on-board sound? Don't use on-board sound, you're just asking for troubles then.
looks like dell has done it again... sound and mic on opposite ends of the computer? clever...
you want to be putting sound into the computer
... how?
does anybody know how to increase the volume of my mic on my headphones? its really soft. i have the recording volume set to full in windows, and halflife, and the volume on the headphones set to full [even though it shouldnt matter]. any ideas?
Not sure what they are called, but the thing on the left side of this pic has plugs for mic and headphones, and can plug into any usb port. That little bulge is some kinda mini sound card I think.
edit: Dang, he allready got it.
Anyway,
Eediot, most driver sets for sound cards (onboard or pci) can have a mixer/equalizer that can crank up sound much higher than windows default. For my soft pair of headphones I use this. Or, you can always try manual adding in a volume wheel on the wire connecting the headphones.
(Don't, unless you know what your doing)
Anyway, I might be able to put that volume control in.. I have heaps of experience in modding. I managed to turn my power supply and harddrive into glorified paperweights
