1.6 million Players Per Month
I was just checking out the stats over on SteamPowered.com today and saw the small print near the top of the screen on the "STEAM PLAYER NUMBER STATISTICS" page...

Average unique users per month: 1,633,763

Is it just me... or dose anyone else think that no game will ever have that big of a player base?

Alas, CS makes it the most played game... It's a well known statistic, there was even numbers on playerbase on gamespy somewhere...

It had more players than the next 2 or 3 games in the list combined. This was about a year ago though.

Well, it's the most played MOD... and most played FPS (in general) of all time as well.

The current MMOs with the largest number of accounts are probably Everquest, Final Fantasy XI, and Ultima Online. When it comes it unique accounts, all 3 combine dont even = 1 million.

Both EverQuest and UO each have about 150 - 200 thousand active Accounts... and a certian % of those accounts are duplicates or triplicates of the same person.

I thought I read that The Sims is the largest grossing game; it used to be Myst...

as to whether it is played for more man-hours than, say, counterstrike, I dunno...

Lineage is still on top of the game with no less than 2,500,000 subscribers. That's not counting Lineage II.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHA no.

Everquest: Last Month was reported at 700,000 subscribers, 400,000 at peak times each night.

Final Fantasy XI: 600,000 subscribers(worldwide), 350-450k on at all times(being that our peak hours are opposite JP, and vice versa. And now that were adding euros to the mix, it'll be even more- and more peak hour times).

Ultima Online: Last I remember(this could be REALLY old) 450,000 subscribers, 200,000 on at peak hour times.

...Lineage kicks our ****, but we definately topple 1 million.

The main reason Lineage is so popular is that it's the only Korean based MMO out there.

Just wait until HL2 comes out, then the player base will skyrocket(maybe)

Diablo 2 had near 6 million players (through out the whole month) the first month of release. If I remember correctly that record still stands as most players online at any given time.

No offence but you honestly seem to have no idea what you're talking about... Koreans have so many MMORPGs I can't even begin to count them. Without even remotely trying I could link you to at least 12 and if I sat down and looked I could find in the range of 30 or more.

Where do you think Ragnarok Online Orginated from? Ever heard of Talesweaver? Nexus? Laghaim? Corum? Lateinos? Frigging MU Online came from korea ><
With their online culture I'd hazard a guess to say that Koreans are responsible for producing more MMORPGs than any other country!!! o.O

I'd love to see how many subscribers it would require for the average korean MMORPG to pay for itself. Perhaps there is room for more?

wow, where'd you get that graph from? I've never tried lineage, and out of all the games on that graph, I strangely know the least about it. it must be that I'm living in a cave...

both lineage and lineage 2 got pretty horrible reviews - why does lineage have more than two times the subscribers of all the other games combined?

I wonder where planetside would be on that chart... not an RPG but MMO...
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
Lineage didn't really take off much outside of korea but the korean MMO market is far larger than in most other countries in the world thanks to widespread broadband and 'PC Bangs' which are kinda like net cafes but more game-centric often catering to MMO players. Koreans don't particularly like using credit cards and whatnot so they often get PC Bang Owners to subscribe for them ^^

As a result you kinda get sorta 'loyalty' as people stick to their personal bangs and they end up as pretty powerful social groups online. Its thanks to many of the players being in the same room you can see so many over the top examples of intricate teamwork in korean MMOs such as armies marching in formation, synchronised artillery and highly coordinated siege attacks =o

Snide sexism? It's a fact that The Sims has only done so well because of its female player base. I don't get what's wrong with that.

Thats so wrong. Unless I just happnen to know a lot of sadistic women. Every girl I know that played the Sims in any incarnation absolutly LOVED to torture and rain misery on their little people. They'd do stuff I'd consider beyond sick. Like walling a little kid in a room, and let it starve to death in a pile of its own waste. Ye gods.
