    1. Contact your broadband staff.
    2. Maybe you have virus? Scan your computer.
    3. Or maybe Spyware? Download <a href='http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html' target='_blank'>Ad-aware 6.0</a>.
    4. Check your cables.
    5. <b><u>USE MOZILLA FIREFOX!</u></b>

    Dont listen to him.

My internet usually dies every hour for a couple of minutes in the summer, contact your ISP just to be sure. One of Road Runner's 'Maintenance' runs, completely fragged the servers down here.

Just to be safe though, run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D

As said above, its almost definately your ISP's fault and almost definately not your fault (unless you are for some random reason running several hundred feet of unshileded cable in coils between your modem and your wan)

Check for virii and spirii, and if everything pans out, pull out the ISP smacking stick.

Swiftspear, don't be so quick to say it's the ISP.

Can we get more information about it. How are you connecting, what are you using (Could be crappy / faulty kit), does the connection actually disconnect or does it just seem to disconnect. Check things like the uptime or activity of your router, and yes, definately do a spyware and virus scan just to be on the safe side.

Have you got any unknown processes running? Bring up the Task Manager and google anything that doesn't look familiar to see if it's a valid process or not.

Yes it's possible that it's the ISP, but then again, it's just as possible that it's your own stuff.

Well, considering the connection's going on and off it's -probably- not a software problem...
    (check for spyware first, though!)
when the connection seems dead, are you able to ping other addresses? (probably not)
can you make a connection to your modem when the internet is 'dead' ?
did you try turning your modem off and on again?

if your modem is working correctly there's probably some problem in the ISP's system, you most likely have to renew an expired ticket.....
open a prompt, and type in "ipconfig /release", after that "ipconfig /renew"
If it still doesn't work after that, contact your ISP.

oh, another thing (kind of important) can you test your connection with another computer? a laptop? anything will do really, it's just so you know for certain your PC isn't the source of the problem.

As mentioned above, check the machine for spyware/adware/virii/trojans and other malware. If you can keep your connection up long enough, there are plenty of free virus scanners that are pretty decent.

If your machine is clean, then you can start looking at the Task Manager for strange processes as, again, has been mentioned. There are sites that list what each process is, so that could help diagnose any strangisms on that front.

If the hardware, or network is failing on your end, you may want to ping yourself to find out if at least your network card is periodically failing. Do you use a router ? Are your cables nice and secure ? Have mice eaten your CATV line between you and the road ?

If all seems to be well on your end, you can then try investigating the connection between you and the outside world. A rolling tracert can identify faults in the network. You may find you can ping to a certain point between you and the ISP's main gateway and no further. In which case, it definately is your ISP.

Try a virus site for manual removal instructions. Symantec is a good place to start.
