Timeline Of Videogames: No Half-life

PBS is going to do a special tomorrow called The Video Game Revoluation. The webpage for it is <a href='http://www.pbs.org/kcts/videogamerevolution/' target='_blank'>here</a>.

On the <a href='http://www.pbs.org/kcts/videogamerevolution/history/timeline_flash.html' target='_blank'>timeline</a>, the years are layed-out, and it has landmarks for each year.

To my surprise, there is no mention of Half-Life. It strikes me as odd that Half-Life, one of the most popular games ever, a game that is still selling copies six years after release (when you consider that technology becomes outdated in about a month, thats very impressive), isn't even given a second glance.

They didn't mention DOOM or Quake either...

Which leads me to believe that the people who created this know nothing of video games.

You know they're on crack if they didn't mention DOOM.

They out Pocket Pikachu and the Dreamcast there...

Pocket Pikachu made it, yet the entire FPS genre was completely left out. Hrm. Makes sense. Its like taking a timeline of the most important events of the 20th century and leaving out every single war.

    ...Doom IS on there. 1993.

Oh... those little circles at the bottom do somthing you say?

Yeah, DOOM is there. It says that it crashed a university mainframe when a downloadable version was released right before the full version.

Ah, the good 'ole days of leakage.

It would take up FAR too much time to cover any one specific genre.

I'm happy that they picked Doom to represent FPSs.

Yeah and Deer Hunter is there too (1998)! That really was a breakthrough...

It's more of a history of console gaming than anything else, which is unsurprising. Barely a nod given to PC games at all.

I'm glad they gave credit to Dreamcast and PSO where credit is due, and a real timeline covering everything would be way too big, but...Come on. Pocket Pikachu?

Edit: <b>Dear sweet christ, these fools! They put G4 as a milestone!</b>

They missed a few hundred actual relevent events in there.

This is definitely true. It reeks of console bias, not just in the amount of material, but the nature. It talks about what a great hit all the console stuff it has is, and only seems to highlight PC games that they can find something bad about.

    OMG...

America's army cost 6 million to develop for a free game.

That'd bought HOW many bullet proof vests and M4s [if spent the correct way]? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    1993 - Second milestone - DOOM. Happy?

    1958... HAHAHA! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

[and yes it does seem odd now that i've seen all of it that no other computer game is mentioned... it should be more like "the history of console games" not the "history of gaming" <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ]

Apparently "Age of Empires" was a "milestone"...

Okay, so maybe they're just stupid instead of biased.

At least they mentioned Custer's revege.

Although they failed to mention any of the stuff that actually killed Atari (Pac-Man, Jaguar, etc).

Big Truck Racing (or something similar) is a much worse "mainstream" game than those others he has there.

Pfft - no "history of the videogame" is worth anything without mention of the speccy/C64.

Did I mention I was on a PHL POTD? Why aren't I on the timeline?
