The deadline for the IGF Competition has been extended to this Friday, September 3, at 11:59pm. We had a significant number of teams request a couple of extra days to finalize their entries, and our judging timeline can flex a little in this regard, so everyone has 48 extra hours to polish their games!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Playing videogames is as much a part of our leisure time today as much as reading, watching television, or playing sports. The game industry has grown into a $10 billion industry, and millions of people from around the world play games on their computer, on consoles, and even PDAs and cell phones.
As more people have begun to play videogames, more people have become interested in the craft of developing games. As such, an enormous community of independent game developers has emerged over the past decade, most of whom are creating PC games (due to the enormous amount of documentation for the PC, and the many inexpensive development tools for PC developers). Like independent filmmakers, independent game developers have small budgets (typically self funded) but big dreams. As more colleges and universities add game development courses and degrees to their programs, there are thousands of students creating games as part of their coursework -- student game developers.
The CMP Game Group (producer of Game Developer magazine, Gamasutra.com, and the Game Developers Conference) established the Independent Games Festival in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game developers. We saw how the Sundance Film Festival benefited the independent film community, and we wanted to create a similar event for independent game developers as well as the student population of game developers. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
