help me, im about to mailbomb ATI
ok, i got a Powercolor Radeon 9800 pro 128MB the other weekend, and it was all good till i noticed that the SMARTGART™ function of the catalyst drivers has my AGP speed set to "OFF". i selected 8x (i have an 8x slot, 8x card, bios is set to 8x), SMARTGART said to restart. i thought "ok" and did so. when windows loaded i checked the SMARTGART section of display properties and its stuck permanently on OFF, i can move it up to 8x, but when it restarts to change the settings, SMARTGART moves it back to off and sets it.

this is really **** me off as i waited for the card to come down in price and lamer ATI drivers are crippling the thing

please help a fellow NS player out

EDIT - and btw it ISNT windows as the previous drivers (ancient 3.2 drivers that came on disc with card), could have it at 8x agp

EDIT #2 - i thought that something was wrong when i started NS up and was getting 20 fps on a 9800

I have Smoothvision disabled too, yet I dont have any problems.
You're on the "OpenGL" tab, right?

Still, I dont think this is the problem. (Well it cant be if I am getting 75 fps and have it disabled,) so we should look elsewhere.

Do you get low framerates in other games? (Including non-steam.)
Have you tried renaming your config.cfg and userconfig.cfg files (to anything, config.old for example,) then firing up NS? (This reset configs to defaults and rules out any wierd graphic settings you may have acquired.)

Re-post and we'll go from there.

No hes talking about AGP Acceleration.

Are you sure that your motherboard is capable of AGP?

Uninstall your ATI drivers from the control panel, then try installing the new 4.8s.

The ATI drivers aren't "lame" since you are the only person so far (that i know of) that has this problem.

my guesses would only stand in checking things you have already checked, aka:
    1) Recheck that windows is set to use 8x
    2) take a very long look at your bios.

Some ATI 9800 series cards and some boards are having problem running 8x AGP together... You really dont need 8x over 4x for NS and most of the newer games...

Just use AGP 4x which Im sure will run more smoothly and stable...

As for FPS issues in NS... make sure you changed ati settings below to 0 in config.cfg file...

    ati_npatch "0"
    ati_subdiv "0"

You should have stable 100 FPS with that... If you cant; check AA and AF settings of your graphic card... Lower or turn them off if needed...

    Its a common problem.
However, its a problem with your motherboard, not the card. Upgrade the motherboard drivers.
