Just thought I should mention that comparing P2P filesharing to CC fraud is a place you do not want to go, because it will only harm your points since the two subjects are not comparable.
I'll have to agree with the bans on this issue. Besides, I bought Half-Life five years ago on sale at CompUSA for $9.99 (Yes, it was a legal copy. I have no idea how CompUSA pulled it off). I was able to get CS, DoD, and TFC all for free. The people who bought CS or DoD are also able, through Steam, to get everything else for free. It's been a long, long time since they've earned any money from me.
Considering that they've offered two products to me for free - CS and DoD - that retailed for $20, I think a $20 donation for CS:CZ works out well. Sure, it might not be the best $20 I've spent, but if you just consider it a donation, you'll be fine. As a bonus, you also get the Source Beta! If you stop thinking that a company owes you anything, you'll be fine.
Just shop smart, read reviews, keep your ears open and be wise with your money. Don't do anything illegal - it's not worth it. I, for one, am happy with what I have and will wait for Half-Life 2.
The people confused about the line between bans and criminal actions should note that most of these people didn't succeed, and the ones that did commited fraud for 20-40 bucks. The FBI doesn't really get involved with anything under $2000 because that's when its considered grand larceny.
And for those of you that STILL think using CC generators and stolen credit cards isn't a big deal get your heads on straight because identity theft is being cracked down on big time.
first hes trying to steal a $30 game seconed hes not trying it once he tries 11 times some one needs to beat that kid silly

Keygen all you want, with such a slim chance of success I'm pretty sure your *** will be banned before you get anywhere.
I would bet allmost every single "stolen" key, have been so through social engineering in one form or other. Well as far as Hackers in CS go there's a simple breakdown chart.
Passworded Servers- No cheaters ever (because if they use hacks they would have permission of some sort) Secure, Admined, and frequently Moderated servers- Maybe 1 hacker a week or so, quickly banned, and hardly a problem Secure, Admined but loosely- Hacker every other day, usually gers Steam ID written down and banned later Secure, Admined by asshats- Hacker ever day to every other day, sometimes the admins themselves, no one ever gets banned, can blatently hack for hours. Insecure servers- Multiple Hackers 24/7.

That's true, the only really good cheat counter is a well trained admin who knows how to spot them. But they also must know how to spot really good players so they aren't falsely banned.

I used to play CS almost non-stop since beta 6.5 I only really changed games when I discovered NS, about a week after it came out. On the few occasions where I've tried CS again, I've found any server so full of idiots and children, and also some very suspect players, I've just deleted the thing.
Its a shame really, because without getting into the changes (which I never really had a problem with) over the versions, playing CS in beta was really very good fun. For the most part, the players were very mature. I played on Barrysworld, and they were pretty well adminned.
FYI (hope this is ok on the CoC) if anyone wants to know what happened to Barrysworld, goto www.freddyshouse.com, thats where the community is now.
With regard to this whole CS:S thing, personally I think its hilarious. I wouldn't be so hollow as to claim that 'omg they are pirates kill them omg', because I have some 'dodgy' stuff on my pc, as I'm sure many others here have. I think the funny thing about it is the way that some of these people have feigned surprise, and disgust, for basically being caught with their pants down.
Barrysworld huh? You might've been shot in the head by me in the past once XD
I got banned from a german server once. They thought I was using a superhack or something because I got 5 headshots in a row through some walls... Guess it never occurred to them that 3 of them had been through a door where I'd have known where the head was the minute I heard the footsteps behind it while admittedly the other 2 were either intuition or fluke

I guess people get so used to getting killed a certain way as soon as something out of the ordinary happens they cry hacks.
Why hack though? After playing it long enough just about anybody becomes a headshot machine (considering what the worst player in our year did with a scout) =/
My year in university were all avid CSers for about 3-4 years (they got me into it back in beta 3 I think) and by the end of the year we were trouncing most other players on the net who just couldn't put in the ludicrious hours we all did =3 Two of the guys ended up killing whole teams with just the knife... they scared me.
The worst thing that happened that people would probably think 'omg hacks' at (though a lot of what the year eventually got to was silly enough to make people's eyes boggle) was either the time that one guy took out 3/4s of the ct team in 2 AWP shots (triple headshot followed immediately by a double... I was the 2nd victim in that double) or every single match in as_oilrig. 5 of the people in my year had worked out exactly where the VIP spawned and could headshot it at the start of the level from almost anywhere with the AWP, ending it almost immediately after the round started; quite often there'd be 2 or 3 of them shooting at once meaning it was impossible for the VIP to actually survive o.O
There was also the infamous window jump where if you spawned near the CT start in oilrig you could do a daring jump from one narrow window to the other and kill the whole team while they were still buying weapons. It was funny because most people couldn't even comprehend that a T would get there so fast and would ignore you completely as if you were a CT while you killed everyone... it's a very surreal experience XD
Most of us also managed a lot of other 'magic shot' locations like capping whoever was using the camera in that warehouse one (Assault?). You'd just stand on the roof or on the ground and listen for someone using the camera then fire at a certain place... 9 out of 10 times you'd get a kill =3 I think everyone who played CS probably knew that one or a few of the others though ^^
edit: ick... looks like I'm boasting... the point I was getting at is that with enough time put in you can get so good at CS hacks are pointless and besides they just ruin the fun. Given the hours most people in my uni put in almost anyone could become lethal enough to take out whole teams single handedly; one or two of them were really good but I'd say the rest of us (like lil me) were just average gamers who spent too much time playing it

So I just shelled out 12 bucks for a new key. No big deal.

Yeah, though I was able to get the 12 bucks out of him, but really, thats pocket change.

I'll admit to taking advatage of the situation and trying out cs:s, it looks great, but I really dont like the CS community (too many damn cheaters/lamers IMO). I played a few rounds & played around with the physics a bit and went back to coding NS.
At least the "HACKER" screams whenever someone killed someone were not as much, hell, I tmp'ed 3 terrorists with headshot in a period of about 2 seconds and no one screamed "hacker".
Of course, my score was about 6/35 or something.
Passworded Servers- No cheaters ever (because if they use hacks they would have permission of some sort)
Secure, Admined, and frequently Moderated servers- Maybe 1 hacker a week or so, quickly banned, and hardly a problem
Secure, Admined but loosely- Hacker every other day, usually gers Steam ID written down and banned later
Secure, Admined by asshats- Hacker ever day to every other day, sometimes the admins themselves, no one ever gets banned, can blatently hack for hours.
Insecure servers- Multiple Hackers 24/7.
Pretty accurate from what I've seen.

Works for about most mods too, eh?

Only problem is 2000 out of 3000 servers fall under numbers 3-4.

Reminds me of a funny time when I actually was hacking on an fy map, I got a silly amount of headshots with the colt, left the server to have some food came back without hacks, got 3 headshots with a scout and got banned for hacking.
I guess people get so used to getting killed a certain way as soon as something out of the ordinary happens they cry hacks.
My year in university were all avid CSers for about 3-4 years (they got me into it back in beta 3 I think) and by the end of the year we were trouncing most other players on the net who just couldn't put in the ludicrious hours we all did =3
Two of the guys ended up killing whole teams with just the knife... they scared me.
9 out of 10 times you'd get a kill =3
I think everyone who played CS probably knew that one or a few of the others though ^^
edit: ick... looks like I'm boasting... the point I was getting at is that with enough time put in you can get so good at CS hacks are pointless and besides they just ruin the fun. Given the hours most people in my uni put in almost anyone could become lethal enough to take out whole teams single handedly; one or two of them were really good but I'd say the rest of us (like lil me) were just average gamers who spent too much time playing it
