The whole of your map is pulled "outa your arse" compared to the screenshot above.

You'll let it be. God, this community has turned into **** - people will steal anything just because they "can" or they don't know who made it. What the hell? Make your own stuff people - getting inspiration is one thing, but stealing is a whole 'nother.

I can understand why you posted asking whose stuff this was. Especially if the author lost the source and wanted it (hard drive crashes happen with frightening regularity on these forums) The fact that no one came to a semi public place and claimed it does not make it yours to use. Did you put some kind of message on the ftp server you got it from? Posting this here is kind of like finding a dog across town and putting signs up at your house, sort of helpful, but not enough effort to declare it unwanted. Leave someone else's mapping to them. There's no need to steal it, or build off it, or even approximate it with your own brushwork. There are plenty of good things you can make for NS on your own, do that and leave everyone else to do it for themselves as well.

Can you guys cut BlackPlague some slack? He politely asks who's map it is, and if no one claims it then he wants to use it. Now he says that he wont use it because you told him not to. He's doing the right thing putting it up in the FIRST PLACE instead of just nabbing it and doing whatever the hell he wants with it. Jesus, sometimes I think you guys are like savages who attack the nearest person who even hints the word "OMG STEAL" even though that is NOT the case here.

Posting the map here is not an effective way to contact the mapper. Finding an email address to contact the person who made the map and getting their permission is the only way to actually get permission to use this file. Without explicit permission from the author using the source from this map is stealing it. Putting it up here, although a good idea to help track down the original mapper, is <i>not</i> enough to justify using it if someone doesn't reply. Blackplague is doing the right thing by respecting someone else's work and leaving it alone. There are plenty of good ideas out there, leave this one to the guy who originally came up with it.

hmm, well how about thinkin about this. what if i CANT find the author's contact information? it was in the ftp with out readme, contact information, or anything. so it would be like working magic to find the author. and im not going to use this because you guys told me not to, and id feel bad if someone told other people that i used their stuff in my map and then no one would play my map.


my brother asked me yesterday why do i do this? i told him its a hobby, he goes. I thought the same... I think he mean "remake" though. I see no problem in REMAKING and doing some twitches and turns in the design.
But rebuilding from what it is now, I see as a rather stupid idea, that is stealing, but the above suggestion is not.

If you can't find the mapper and you have made a <i>decent</i> attempt at finding him/her then I guess the only person who can make the decision whether to use it, whether as inspiration or for a rebuild, is you. It's your call but I have two things to put to you:

1. What's so good about that corridor anyway?
2. Wouldn't you rather have the satisfaction of knowing everything was your original work? I know I would. Fine we all are influenced by ideas here and there but it's generally obvious to both the author and those who play on the map where ideas have originated. My pride and my conscious rule out knowingly stealing other people's ideas/concepts (which -before you get agitated- is not what I'm suggesting you are doing).

As with most things in life, the final decision is made by you, and you alone...make it count!

The only reason you'd be able to enforce this is because he's publicised the fact that he found it. Who's to say that someone else isn't in the same situation. It's pointless saying you <i>can't</i> use it because there's no way to stop everyone who finds unclaimed/lost work from copying it. You are correct to say that it is stealing, but in reality -who's to know? We map in a community riddled with cheats, teamkillers etc. so what makes you think that people won't duplicate a map for their own personal gain. You seem to be under the impression that some invisible and all-powerful force is going to automatically and immediately delete every file created containing someone else's work. It's just not gonna happen.

What I think you meant to say was that you <u>shouldn't</u> use other people's work, which is exactly what I was implying. Please, before <i>clearing things up</i> for me, read and <b>understand</b> what I have written...
