Computer Restarts

Hi, I'm having real trouble getting NS to work properly on my computer.

Specs:
Windows XP Home
Catalyst 4.5
P4 2.4Ghz
Radeon 9200
512 DDR

I can run NS fine, no problems. That is until the map changes or I try to quit the game. Then, my computer just restarts itself without warning.

I don't have this problem with any other games on Steam, or any other programs for that matter, so it must be a problem with NS. I have installed older versions of the Catalyst drivers and run the driver cleaner but the still had the same problem.

If you have any ideas at all please post them!

hmmm...you mean NS by v.3.0b4a right? And you have STEAM? Are you sure you can start on any map, but when it changes it restarts?

All in all you should most-likely re-install NS.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I do mean NS 3b4a, and I have tried reinstalling NS, and Steam, but still no change. It's not a Steam related problem as CS and DoD and anything else runs fine on Steam. It's only NS.

What happens is I can join the game fine, everything is working. Then the map changes and the progress bar gets about 2/3 of the way through, then my screen goes black and the computer restarts.

When I try to quit NS the normal way the same thing happens. The only way to get around it is to end the hl.exe process before it even starts to change map. Often this doesn't work either.

If you have 2 cpus try installing ns there and see if it works. Maybe you should try downloading your ns files from a different web site. Are you using any metamod/ AMX mod? I had a problem like this once, except it was when I tried to quit only, I got rid of all my metamod stuff, and it worked. So anyways, other than those things, I don't know what the problem is.

Have you tried starting a LAN server and changing maps?

I'm sure I've posted on this thread before. Double post perhaps?
    Meh. Either way.

If your Pc is restarting randomly, and you're running XP, it's generally as there's been a program crash and you've got those damn winNT defaults turned on.

Solution to prevent restarting after crashes (Still need to fix the crash though. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
    =====================================================
    Winkey+Pause,
    "Advanced" tab,
    Bottom frame, "Settings"
    "System Failure" frame,
Uncheck all boxes, no mem dump, no restart, no administrative alert. (Yes, what useful defaults these are for a home box.)

Now, play NS. When it crashes, post details of the error message.

Also try resetting configs, updating drivers (VERY unlikely, as it runs 1 game fine,) and all the other things mentioned in stickied threads.

Will help after error details are posted here.

BlueNovember, that was a great tip! I didn't know those options even existed. Anyway, I did what you said, and when it crashed I got a blue screen. It said there was a problem with cmaudio.sys, and that it had tried to write to read-only memory.

I'll reinstall my audio drivers and everything should be sweet. It never crossed my mind that audio drivers would be the cause, because as I said, I haven't had troubles in any other game.

Thanks for your help guys, appreciate it!
