contract or not If i was in his position I would do the same thing. I wouldn't want to be a tool of the neo-conservative movement either.

Well, that's why you're not in the military in the first place. You know you'd have conflicting personal opinions and so you chose the best action for you, which is not to join.

It's a little late for Lcpl Abdul Henderson to come to the conclusion that he shouldn't have joined. That's life... the best way to proceed would be to do his job until his enlistment is up.

He will still be subject to recall however, as part of his contract.

Lets hope he doesn't dig himself into a deeper hole.

You have an obligation to the military if you sign up, but your obligation to being human comes first. Defend that to the death, and not some superfluous nationalistic ideals.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> Yeah. It's fully alright. Contracts are not made unbreakable. He should face whatever the consequences are for deserting as stated in the contract. As I see it, killing for money is horribly repulsive. At least he can leave with his conscience intact.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

When you're born, you don't have to sign a contract pledging yourself to humanity. I'm really under no obligation to give a damn about anybody. Abdul, on the other hand, has signed a contract that demands he give a damn about being a Marine and all that such a title entails, including the code of justice that he agreed to abide by. I don't think that there have even been any formal charges at this point.

I think that the ultimate point is that if one has such a strong objection to killing, one shouldn't join the military.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> Does it concern you then Zig that the military has advertisment campaigns I could label propaganda as easily you labeled Moores expose? Recruiters hang out in highschools, publish a video game and you don't think that kind of marketting dosen't lure?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

It certainly sells. However, it's up to the person joining the military to understand their obligations and be informed. If you don't read a contract before you sign it, whose fault is it? MEPS is indeed all about getting down to business and they even give you several chances to back out.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> How about the fact that many young people join the military because its the only hope they have getting money for college? That dosen't seem like much a choice for them<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

A poor choice perhaps, but a choice nonetheless. Educational benefits are part of the compensation that soldiers get for doing their job. However, one must actually do their job. The Marine Corps is simply asking Henderson to fulfill his end of the bargain, which he agreed to do when he joined. There's no free ride when you're working for Uncle Sam. You want college, you do what you're told.

EDIT: This is rather reminiscent of the Brandon Hu*** discussion a few months ago.

    <i>exactly</i>.

Can't hurt the civilians to learn a little bit about how the military works.

Unless you are the civilian of a certain occupied oil rich nation.

The US treats Middleeastern nations like the football captain treats a drunken cheerleader.

I don't recall US military personnel buying beers for and then borderline-raping Iraqi civilians... nice image, though, thanks.. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    That was quite vivid.

The guy signed and he has to abide, what more can we say?
