    Root Beer is brewed in the same maner that Beer is.

    There is a reason why many micro/quasimicro breweries also make RB (Brookly Brewery makes a good one)

    As for the root?
    well, actual recepies use Ginger, Birch Bark, and a few other roots and barks(thus why you can also buy Ginger Beer and Birch Beer, all 3 are basicaly the same exept that some omit certain flavorings)

    Coca-Cola was originally flavored with <a href='http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Coca' target='_blank'>coca</a> leaves (amusingly, the same plant that cocaine comes from) and <a href='http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Kola_nut' target='_blank'>kola</a> berries. It was also originally intended to be medicinal in nature and was rebranded as a "soft drink" during Prohibition. As Coke was the first cola, it coined the term "cola" to define that particular kind of soda.

    Pepsi is named for pepsin, an ingredient in the soda.

    But I still find it amusing that Cola had cocaine in it before. Well, actually, that was 2 years ago when I was fascinated by that fact. But daaaamn.....cocaine in a soft drink?
