Certainly looks like one to me but then again I am not a moon-expert.

Yeah, seen it. It's actually pretty scary when you think about it.

    Also, wrong forum?

I think it would depend on whether a scientific discussion were to manifest itself.

    *sigh* I could only hope.

as clarification, that is an interesting photo of an obscure moon of saturn, taken recently by our probe that is currently in the area.

not much discussion to be had, im afraid. Off-Topic would have a field day with sci-fi references.

Seriously though, that's pretty creepy. Is there an explination for what could cause such a huge and distinctive crater?

As scientifically gripping this discussion as been so far, it does belong in OT.

George Lucas is gonna accuse that moon of copyright infringement, claim the moon for himself, and then blow it up and replace it with a "digitally remastered" version, aka a pencil drawing on lined paper.

That's impossible. No space station is that big.

As significant as it may sound, "don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

    Since both the responses I could think up were taken;

@ Edward.r2: Homage to the Something Awful forums? That had me laughing for a while.

@ 5kyh16h91: I was thinking the exact same thing. Nice.

nasa says that the peak in the middle of the crater is the size of mt everest. thats a pretty big crater, and a pretty tiny moon.

they constantly edit their photos for color correction, and they even go as far to color certain object for the general publics clarification. Just think..... that guy has to get bored sometime, what if he just sent the wrong file........

What kind of Nikon cameras do you have?

    He is right.

Pictures are usually not taken in the visible light spectrum. Visible light tells you almost nothing about a celestial body. You can obtain more information in almost every other avenue of the electromagnetic spectrum. Many of the "wow, that's a beautiful picture" photographs are taken in false colors and alternate parts of the electromagnetic spectrum (or just visible light with no blue, or visible light + infrared or something).

However, that's quite distinctly a crater. They're all over the place like that. Take a look at a picture of the moon or Mars and you'll see plenty of craters - circular crater and small nub (comparatively speaking) denoting a crater.

...They're not really photoshopped more...not what you think when you look at it right away.

    ....Porkins! NOooooooooooooo!

Well, the names really from back in the day when i started to get into photography, I bought myself a FM-10, love the camera, still have it. unfortunately, due to finanaces, I never really excelled in the hobby, but ive had the name since SoF came out. I also owned a CoolPix 3700, but i sold that.

I know that NASA edit their photos, but I meant "photoshop" the sense that I'm pretty sure that he meant it - that of editing it with photoshop to produce a fake image.
