GameSpy: What are the current player-hosting capabilities of the game? Is it still designed around 4 players, or has that been expanded?

    RD: DOOM 3 multiplayer is based around 4 players; however, internally it is not limited to that. Mod teams will be able to support more. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

let the moddage begin!

    There must be a reason it's only 4 player though.. but I don't understand how it could lag with 8 or even 10 players at least. Most of it is client side physics right?

    There aren't that many multiplayer maps release with the game either. Lets just hope that people take advantage of it's lush graphics and make some killer custom maps or even mods of their own.

    first of all you don't know how many maps are released, and it's obviously a gameplay choice such as splinter cell pandora tomorrow had.

    I'm thinking coop here, personally.

    id insists that while the engine is capable of more than 4 players, it was a design decision (as in, gameplay) to limit it to 4 players. They have said it is entirely possible (and easy) for mod makers to have more than 4 players, but the news that it is no longer a syncronious connection is great news indeed.

    Hopefully its because they don't want to prematurely trump Quake 4. ;)

    5 DM maps come with the game. Personally, as long as they are all high-quality, memorable arenas then I'm fine with that quantity.

    Quake 2 came with none, so I don't see it as a big deal. :P

    Think about it - how many multiplayer maps do you <i>really</i> play? As in, regularily? There's a reason that the Q3Test map later became the most popular DM map of the game. Five official maps are more than enough. Let the community take care of the rest.

    Doom is hardly a team game, it's more of a lone player/2 or 3 player squad type game.

    Lag would completely ruin the atmosphere.
    sneaking through an un-lit tunnel with only a flashlight, then..... the lag hits.
    You regain control in a few seconds to find yourself dead.

    how fun

    Co-op is the best gameplay mode ever...

    Even if it is supposedly only for the Xbox version, I'm hoping that a co-op mod for Doom III PC will pop up somewhere along the line...
