Just keep messing around with it until you find something you're confortable with.
I use 5, for both aliens and marines. I use a Func pad, like you, and a MX500.
I tried 40 once, but it was a little too high for me. I keep working my way up.
I use close to full inb windows(90%) and 2 in game
