My new quest.
OK, so the other day I was sitting around eating some Goldfish and watching Pulse on G4/TechTV and they did a little feature where they used special loader software to load games onto a custom PS2 Hard Drive. The guy didn't really go into much detail about it, but he said that it was possible to make your own, and I found out that even I could do it.

The point is, I'm going to make a custom PS2 hard drive. Here are the parts:

Sony PS2 Network Adapter: $34.00 ($36.02 w/ tax)
Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive: $71.00 ($75.26 w/ tax)

Total: $111.28

------------------------------------------------------------

Official PS2 Hard Drive: $101.00 ($107.06 w/ tax)

------------------------------------------------------------

If you compare them you can see why I would want to make my own. For only $4.22 more I get 40 more GB of storage.

Thoughts?

I see how it's practical to buy, any idea on what you're gonna fill it up with?

    ROM's?

Theres a program called game loader or something and it loads all of your games on to the hard drive to basically achieve faster load times.

You could just buy an XBox and chip it. XBox - £100, Chip - £20 MAXIMUM

    Total - £120

    Average Xbox price: £125
Average chip price (with installation): £45
Average harddrive (essential if you want to store games, movies, emulators etc - with installation): £45-80

If you get a 120gig Xbox loaded with emulators, games and movies, you'll realise this is not a bad thing.

True. The PS2 Online thing uses some sort of authentication that checks for an original copy of the game.

How do you work this HDD magic, anyway? Curious about that...

I'm not sure what your asking, but you connect it by basically sliding it into the expansion bay on the back of the PS2. I've never seen a PS2 HDD in action, so I can only guess speculate that the system recognizes it as a storage device similar to a memory card, and you just save your data to the HDD instead of a memory card. As far as loading the games from the hard drive, I'm not sure. I think you just use the PS2 system browser.

That's what I was asking. Nifty.

I heard it wasn't just a standard ATA hard drive that is used, or at least they have some stupid propriatary connector so you can't just buy any old hard drive and use it...

That's correct, Doomeh. The connector is nonstandard.

And for those with the patience to make a connector (which has been done) the PS2 hard drive comes with a pre-loaded disk image that verifies its identity, as well as a number of sector-cluster arrays and some very specific electronics on the PCB.

In short, a regular drive will not work.

it will with a network adapter.

Leader, is there something you'd care to tell us? The dissections I've read through all list custom components and hardware-level verification circuitry on a modified PCB, as well as physically-destroyed sectors.

If that's the case, then there is NO way, network adapter or not, to plug in a standard hdd and use it.

I don't think this is exactly the place for this discussion though, as it at the very least *implies* illegal activity, if not outright states it (if the 'mod' proves to be possible). If you want more information on the subject, Google is your friend. Beyond that...
