The drops are as far as I know not bound to a certain graphics card, but to certain driver versions. Another member offered the link in ATIs bugtracker database a while ago.

Daza dont do it! Must I come to bunker and beat some sense into you - buying a brand new radeon 9800XT now is insanity!

Pretty soon the ATi x800 and the NVidia 6800 are going to come out and probably lop AUD$200 of the price of an 9800 - so you'd be waaayyy better off holding on to your money for a while. Also, before you get that puppy make sure you have a decent powersupply ie above 300W. I know its kinda basic but plenty of people forget stuff like that.....

You don't need 256MB of Texture Memory... I mean, whats going to use that much?

Oh, and while you still get a free copy of HL^2, ATI withdrew their support (though they still have to honor the offer), so you can't get a boxed game, but you have to download it through Steam.

I say go for the card.

I currently have a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB and it runs fine and I've never had any wierd fps drop that you are talking about. I just suggest that you DO NOT buy an Nvidia card. All of my friends that have upgraded to an Nvidia card have had severe problems with them. But also as Marine01 said it might be best just to wait and see if the prices drop on the x800's.

    Correction.

They're not driver based, but rather system-specific. I had a 9600XT which got 11fps in Marine Spawn (famously, as I moaned about it for weeks ) Now my 9800Pro laughs, but there's still people on the Steam forums with problems with the exact same card.

From my own investigations, I believe it's specific mobo/card combination specific, but I've not found a discernable pattern.

If you've got a Via chipset mobo, you seem to have tripled your chances of the problem though.

Bah, I've heard complaints from both sides (Nvidea and ATI) and all I can say is don't listen to anyone. Just go for it and hope for the best. That's right, don't even listen to me. I have no idea what i'm talking about.

Yea, I've had a cheapo 9000 Pro for a while now. It Still works great after over a year of operation, and it is the cheapo card

If you have your heart set on the 9800XT now, like they said, wait untell the X800 comes out and save some $$$, or get the X800 instead

if you just want it for gaming and hardcore fps, get a radeon 9600 XT, pure framerate at your grasp, but if you are more of a render'ing person and is going to use all the smartshaders etc, go for the 9800 pro

Learn what a refresh rate is, what vsync is, and why you shouldn't go over it, and there's your answer.

    I've got a Radeon 9200 128mb...

No real problems in HL...although, if you're looking at a Turret farm, along with 16 marines and an Onos on the highest settings...well, then it slows down a little.

...Generally it's a solid 60+ frame rate otherwise.

...Then again, I only have 256mb of ram running Windows XP...so I'm sure if you've got more it'd run better. Anyway...no spontaneous FPS drops over here.

R9500 Pro reporting in. 100fps, rock-solid, VSync on.

The X800 series is already available by the way... the local Fry's has the X600 and X800 XTPE available on the shelf. But not a GF6 in sight.

And yet again. 'developer' gives pseudo-fps. The HL engine has a hardcoded limit of 100fps.

Im running HL on a Ti4200(64MB version) NS tends to get around 50-60fps while just walking around, but as soon as anything happens, it drops to 20-30, at which point it becomes almost unplayable.

As I recall, I bought a 9800XT because they were out of stock of the 9800Pro, which was $250 instead of $450. Definitely overpriced, but it beats a GF4MX by a long shot.

If you have performance problems, make sure you disable Fast Write, as that completely fixed my problems. However, Windows 2000 had issues with rebooting when changing these settings, so it took awhile to make the changes stick.

Since ATI's newest cards are out on the market, you may as well take a look at them instead. Remember that motherboards are moving to the PCI-Express bus, which will make AGP obsolete.

    Edit:
For those who think Half-Life can't exceed 100fps, I suggest you run in developer mode by typing "developer 1". This removes the 100fps cap on the fps_max cvar.
