opinions
Hey everybody, I just got a new Dell Dimension 4600 computer and a DSL Modem.

Computer Specs:

2.8GHz P4 with HT
512MB RAM
160GB Hard Drive
GeForce FX 5200 video card 128MB AGP
48x CD/CD-RW Drive
DVD Drive
2 Front USB Ports
2 Speakers and a Subwoofer
17'' LCD Flatpanel display

Since I got a new computer it was decided to ditch all things Comcast and get Verizon DSL. I don't know what any of your experiences with DSL were, but as far as I can tell, DSL is just as fast than cable.

Thoughts?

My DSL kicks ****, Yahoo! SBC DSL. I've got 760MB of Briefcase Space and a 2GB E-Mail address. I'm pleased, don't know about those other providers though.

DSl versus cable really depends on where you live. In my area, Cable is just as cheap as DSL, twice as fast, with no caps on speeds or total monthly usage. DSL around here is capped to 5 gigs total transfer per month, and is only limited speeds. So hands down cable is what I use, and their customer service is 10 times better.

If each ran perfectly, without any limits, cable would win in raw speed while (I think) DSL would win in lower pings. So it just comes down to what kinda service is offered in your area.

You did make one biiiiig mistake tho. Dude, you bought a Dell.

In Illinois Comcast Cable > SBC DSL

    1) Comcast is 3 megs down speed and 256kb up
    2) DSL is hella slow in this area
    3) 768 kb down DSL costs same as Cable

From my experiences i had BETTER usage with my cable i can actually download stuff faster than 20kbps. Yea the WHOLE DSL thing that was really only 5x faster than dialup for me.

Id love Comcast Cable they got good support out here and sorts. So yea i prefer cable over dsl.

In most places DSL is slower, but cheaper then Cable. I don't really see how DSL, going through a whopping PHONE LINE would be faster then a fiberoptic pipe.

I hope you don't plan on playing video games with that rig. Cause that vid card is total sh**. Oh and your vid card is basically a geforce 2 upgraded to take direct x9 drivers lol.

Yea, I have Comcast Cable internet. It pwns verry nicely. I've dotten verry nice DL rates like 615kbps on large files (Linux ISO's) My only real problem is the max speed I can get up seems to be about 32kbps give or take a few kb's.

I know from friends in My area (Denver) that the Cable is much faster than DSL in up speeds and only about equal in up speeds...

Then again... I'm about 10 blocks from the cable company...

Down here bellsouth dsl is pretty much tops, their dsl xtreme package is 4MB/sec downstream, 384kbps upstream, I had charter cable previously, and it was crap. So yeah, as you can see, all you can really do is do some research for your area, and beyond that its hit or miss
