Try "stopsound" in the console, without the quotation marks.

Some people consider eating noodles with a fork instead of chopsticks cheating, i.e. do whatever you want <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Nah, ive already tried stopsound in the console, im not sure if the sounds are built into the map but your know that annoying screaching sound you get in The Great Viaduct, those background sounds.. same goes for Power Silo..

unfortunatly i know what you mean <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> its the most annoying thing in the world not being able to hear a skulk sneak up on you just because the music was on the loud bit.
The only way I can think of combating this would be to delete the mp3's from your nps/media dir
as for the background noise, i wouldnt recommend deleting those as the is alot of them and you may delete the wrong thing <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yes, you can get rid of them by deleting the files, but servers with mp_consistency 1 on them will not like you at all, and most clans will consider it cheating, unfair advantage, playing the game in a way it is not supposed to be played.

yeah but the only way they can figure it out is if you tell them or if they are enforcing file consistency.

The files are there for the atmosphere, personally I don't suggest to delete them, but it's up to you.

NS already lost most of it's atmosphere in 2.01. :/ If it really bothers you and you don't want to delete the files, I believe you can open then in Recorder and increase / decrease the volume of various SFX (I for one have alot of the Hive Mind sayings decreased. I've died too many times to that SGer behind me because "OUR HIVE IS UNDER ATTACK!" by some rambo with a pistol.)

i had my mp3 volume to the lowest, and the background music was completely annoying, so i moved them, is this considered cheating?

Background music can be turned off easily(cl_musicenabled 0 or something like that), but background sounds cannot(e.g. that weird power silo hive noise).

Those are built in ambience noises, and are part of the map. You can not remove them. You can replace the sound files with blank .wavs, but that would count as client modification so you couldn't play in CAL or most other leauges. Get used to it.
